Deep Eutectic Solvent as Green Solvent in Extraction of Biological Macromolecules: A Review

Summary: Greater awareness of environmental sustainability has led to the transition from synthetic organic solvents to greener solvents in various industries. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), with their demonstrated applications in extraction of small-molecule bioactive compounds, are considered highly promising green solvents. However, the use of DES in biomacromolecule extraction has not been extensively studied. This review provides an overview of DES properties and discusses recent advances in DES extraction of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. It also highlights the importance of DES properties on extraction performance and identifies future research needs.
