Deoxynivalenol: Toxicology, Degradation by Bacteria, and Phylogenetic Analysis

Anne Caroline Schoch Marques Pinto et al.

Summary: Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a toxic secondary metabolite produced by fungi that contaminates crops such as wheat, maize, and barley. It affects animal health by causing intestinal barrier impairment and immunostimulatory effect in low doses, and emesis, reduction in feed conversion rate, and immunosuppression in high doses. Mitigatory methods, such as biodegradation, have been developed to address this issue. This review provides an overview of DON's occurrence, regulation, metabolism, and toxicology in recent publications, focusing on animal production. It also explores the enzymatic routes described for DON's degradation by microorganisms and their phylogenetic relationship.

Quercetin mitigates the deoxynivalenol mycotoxin induced apoptosis in SH-SY5Y cells by modulating the oxidative stress mediators

Naveen Kumar Kalagatur et al.

Summary: The study revealed that DON induces apoptotic demise in neuronal cells through oxidative stress, while pre-treatment with 1mM of quercetin (QUE) can counteract the neurotoxic effects of DON and protect cells from damage.

Zearalenone and Its Metabolites-General Overview, Occurrence, and Toxicity

Karolina Ropejko et al.

Summary: Mycotoxins are common food contaminants produced by filamentous fungi, with Zearalenone being one of over 400 detected toxins. Zearalenone, mainly produced by Fusarium fungi, has estrogenic effects and can lead to economic losses and pose risks to animals and humans. Further research and monitoring are needed to address the impact of mycotoxins on the food chain.

Mycotoxins in wheat cultivated in the Netherlands: results from eight years of field surveys

H. J. van der Fels-klerx et al.

Summary: This study investigated mycotoxin concentrations in wheat and their relationships with agronomics in the Netherlands from 2009 to 2018. Results showed that DON and other mycotoxins were frequently detected, with year and region having the most influence on DON levels in wheat, while agronomic practices had limited impact.

Deoxynivalenol and Zearalenone-Synergistic or Antagonistic Agri-Food Chain Co-Contaminants?

Asmita Thapa et al.

Summary: Deoxynivalenol (DON) and Zearalenone (ZEN) are commonly co-occurring mycotoxins produced by members of the genus Fusarium, posing health risks to humans and animals. Their formation before harvesting makes them challenging to eliminate during food production. While the individual impacts of DON and ZEN have been well-studied, further research is needed to understand their co-occurrence and develop mitigation strategies.
