Multiaxial fatigue life prediction method considering notch effect and non-proportional hardening

Yong Ran et al.

Summary: A novel multiaxial fatigue prediction model is developed in this study, considering the notch effect and non proportional hardening. By calculating damage parameters and investigating the relationship between stress gradient and fatigue life, the accuracy of multiaxial fatigue life prediction is improved.

Notches, nominal stresses, fatigue strength reduction factors and constant/variable amplitude multiaxial fatigue loading

Luca Susmel

Summary: This paper presents the reformulation of the Modified Wohler Curve Method to design notched components against constant/variable amplitude multiaxial fatigue loading using nominal stresses. The accuracy of this design methodology is validated against numerous experimental results from the literature, which strongly supports its effectiveness for assessing the multiaxial fatigue of notched structural components, even when fatigue strength reduction factors are estimated using standard formulas.

An experimental investigation into fatigue behaviors of single- and double-sided U rib welds in orthotropic bridge decks

Haibo Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue resistance properties of single- and double-sided welded joints in OBD using the traction structural stress method. Experimental and numerical investigations are conducted, and full-scale fatigue specimen tests are performed to analyze the fatigue property validations and failure modes. The study recommends a specific united master S-N curve for the fatigue performance prediction of single- and double-sided welded joints in OBDs.

A multi-axial vibration fatigue evaluation procedure for welded structures in frequency domain

Xianjun Pei et al.

Summary: Modeling vibration fatigue of welded structures in the frequency domain is challenging due to stress singularity at weld locations and interactions of multiple vibration modes. A comprehensive procedure utilizing mesh-insensitive method and modal decomposition approach is proposed to address these issues. A non-proportionality correlation function is introduced to relate the power spectrum density of normal and shear traction stresses, establishing an effective stress parameter.

A Study of Fatigue Crack Propagation Paths at U-Rib Welds in Orthotropic Bridge Decks using a Phased-Array Imaging Technique

Haibo Yang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fatigue failure modes of single-and double-sided welded joints in orthotropic bridge decks using phased-array imaging technique. The study aims to verify the fatigue failure path defined by the traction structural stress method. Full-scale fatigue specimen tests are conducted to image and size the fatigue crack propagation law. The findings confirm that the fatigue failure mode of these welded joints is the thickness-through mode, consistent with the traction structural stress method.

Traction stress-based fatigue failure mode identification of load-carrying welded cruciform joints

Zezhong Wei et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an analytical solution for the traction stress at the weld root of load-carrying welded cruciform joints, taking into account the effects of weld geometry. The study suggests fatigue failure criteria and verifies them through experimental data. The results demonstrate that the analytical solution accurately predicts the stress state and cracking angle at the weld root, and the failure criteria are effective in distinguishing toe and root failures. The paper also discusses the effects of weld geometry and provides suggestions for fatigue design of joints.

Analysis of fatigue test conditions for reproducing weld toe cracking into U-rib wall in orthotropic bridge decks

Haibo Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue test conditions for reproducing weld toe cracking into U-rib wall in orthotropic bridge decks using both experimental and numerical methods. The traction structural stress method is proven effective in evaluating this fatigue failure mode (referred to as toe-U rib) and its associated test conditions. Experimental validations consistently observed the toe-U rib failure mode, and it was found that variations in weld penetration do not impact the failure mode and its fatigue capability.
