Quercetin alleviates acute kidney injury by inhibiting ferroptosis

Yue Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that quercetin (QCT), a natural flavonoid, inhibited ferroptosis in renal proximal tubular epithelial cells by reducing lipid ROS levels and increasing glutathione (GSH) levels. QCT also ameliorated acute kidney injury induced by ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) or folic acid (FA). Furthermore, RNA-sequence analysis revealed ATF3 as a key factor in QCT's inhibition of ferroptosis. Additionally, QCT inhibited the recruitment of pro-inflammatory macrophages in AKI.

Nuciferine protects against folic acid-induced acute kidney injury by inhibiting ferroptosis

Danyu Li et al.

Summary: Nuciferine effectively mitigates pathological changes and kidney dysfunction in mice with folic acid-induced acute kidney injury, as well as prevents RSL3-induced ferroptotic cell death in vitro. The protective effect of nuciferine against ferroptosis is associated with its ability to prevent iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation, as well as its interaction with GPX4.

Ferroptosis: molecular mechanisms and health implications

Daolin Tang et al.

Summary: Cell death can be executed through different subroutines, such as ferroptosis which is an iron-dependent form of non-apoptotic cell death. Ferroptosis can occur through two major pathways, driven by redox imbalance and abnormal expression of redox-active enzymes. The process is precisely regulated at multiple levels, with the transcription factor NFE2L2 playing a central role in anti-ferroptotic defense.

Overcoming the compensatory elevation of NRF2 renders hepatocellular carcinoma cells more vulnerable to disulfiram/copper-induced ferroptosis

Xueying Ren et al.

Summary: DSF/Cu selectively exerts efficient cytotoxic effect on HCC cells, inhibits migration, invasion, and angiogenesis of HCC cells, impairs mitochondrial homeostasis, increases free iron pool, enhances lipid peroxidation, and eventually results in ferroptotic cell death. Inhibition of NRF2 elevation strengthens HCC cells more vulnerable to DSF/Cu induced ferroptosis.

Guizhi Fuling Capsule ameliorates endometrial hyperplasia through promoting p62-Keap1-NRF2-mediated ferroptosis

Minyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study suggests that GFC may alleviate estrogen-induced endometrial hyperplasia through triggering ferroptosis and inhibiting the p62-Keap1-NRF2 pathway. These findings indicate that GFC could be a promising traditional Chinese medicine for treating endometrial hyperplasia.

A-Lipoic Acid Alleviates Folic Acid-Induced Renal Damage Through Inhibition of Ferroptosis

Xue Li et al.

Summary: The study showed that LA could alleviate renal dysfunction and histopathologic damage caused by FA overdose injection. Additionally, LA supplementation could reduce inflammation, iron overload, reactive oxygen species accumulation, and lipid peroxidation induced by FA. Moreover, LA could inhibit ferroptosis and promote GSH synthesis by reversing the decreased expression of xCT mediated by FA.

Loss of TRIM21 alleviates cardiotoxicity by suppressing ferroptosis induced by the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin

Kai Hou et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that TRIM21 knockout protects against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in both doxorubicin treatment model and LAD model. Mechanistically, TRIM21 can protect the heart from ferroptosis by enhancing the sequestration of Keap1 by p62.
