Sleep Well and Recover Faster with Less Pain-A Narrative Review on Sleep in the Perioperative Period

Reetta M. Sipila et al.

Summary: The decline in sleep quality increases the risk of pain onset, and existing pain exacerbates the decline in sleep quality. The risk factors for developing insomnia and experiencing severe pain after surgery are similar. Therefore, it is important to understand how to assess and monitor sleep disturbances, and support better sleep through pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.

Effects of general versus subarachnoid anaesthesia on circadian melatonin rhythm and postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing hip fracture surgery: A prospective cohort clinical trial

Yanan Song et al.

Summary: This study compared the impact of subarachnoid anesthesia (SA) and general anesthesia (GA) on melatonin secretion, sleep circadian rhythm, and postoperative delirium in elderly hip fracture surgery patients. Results showed that SA had less disruption on melatonin rhythm and sleep patterns, and lower incidence of postoperative delirium compared to GA.
