Unboxing the molecular modalities of mutagens in cancer

Smita Kumari et al.

Summary: The majority of human cancers are linked to various environmental causes like physical, chemical, and biological factors, which induce DNA damage and mutations. Mutations are considered major triggers for genetic and epigenetic insults, leading to cancer. Although DNA repair mechanisms work to protect genetic stability, any aberrations in these mechanisms can provoke cancer. Understanding the types of mutagens, carcinogens, and their impact on DNA damage and cancer induction is crucial for developing rational anticancer strategies.

Coadministration of gallic acid abates zearalenone-mediated defects in male rat's reproductive function

Solomon E. Owumi et al.

Summary: The study showed that gallic acid (GA) has a protective effect on reproductive dysfunction induced by zearalenone (ZEN) in rats. GA can increase reproductive hormone levels, improve sperm quality, inhibit oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, and reduce inflammation in the examined organs. Additionally, GA prevented the decline in circulatory enzymes and hormone levels while protecting against reproductive tissue damage.

Caffeic acid mitigates aflatoxin B1-mediated toxicity in the male rat reproductive system by modulating inflammatory and apoptotic responses, testicular function, and the redox-regulatory systems

Solomon E. Owumi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the protective effects of caffeic acid (CA) against Aflatoxin B1 (AFB(1))-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in male rats. The results show that CA can alleviate the toxic effects of AFB(1) on the hypothalamus, epididymis, and testis by reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis.

Caffeic acid protects against DNA damage, oxidative and inflammatory mediated toxicities, and upregulated caspases activation in the hepatorenal system of rats treated with aflatoxin B1

Solomon E. Owumi et al.

Summary: The study found that caffeic acid can reduce the toxicity of aflatoxin B1 on the liver and kidneys of rats, increase the levels of endogenous antioxidants and the anti-inflammatory factor IL-10, and reduce oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation levels. Additionally, caffeic acid also reduced DNA damage and apoptosis, and preserved the cellular structure of the liver and kidneys.

Apigeninidin-rich Sorghum bicolor (L. Moench) extracts suppress A549 cells proliferation and ameliorate toxicity of aflatoxin B1-mediated liver and kidney derangement in rats

Solomon E. Owumi et al.

Summary: This study found that extracts from Sorghum bicolor plant have potential cytotoxic effects on cancer cells and can ameliorate hepatorenal injuries caused by aflatoxin. The extracts also showed inhibitory effects on oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, and protected the liver and kidney tissues. These findings suggest the potential of these extracts for cancer therapy and prevention of aflatoxin-related health issues.

Early Life Exposure to Aflatoxin B1 in Rats: Alterations in Lipids, Hormones, and DNA Methylation among the Offspring

Oluwakemi A. Rotimi et al.

Summary: The study found that prenatal exposure to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in rats resulted in decreased weight, altered lipid and hormone profiles, and changes in DNA methylation, which may impact cancer risk. Further research is needed to determine if these alterations contribute to the development of early-onset hepatocellular carcinoma.

3-Indolepropionic acid upturned male reproductive function by reducing oxido-inflammatory responses and apoptosis along the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis of adult rats exposed to

Solomon E. Owumi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the antioxidant 3-Indolepropionic acid (3-IPA) can reduce the oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis induced by the organophosphorus pesticide chlorpyrifos (CPF) in the epididymis and testes of male rats. Co-treatment with 3-IPA prevented the increase in biomarkers of reproductive toxicities caused by CPF alone, and also lessened decreases in antioxidants and increases in lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. The findings suggest that 3-IPA may have protective effects against CPF-induced reproductive toxicity in rats.
