All-Organic Redox Targeting with a Single Redox Moiety: Combining Organic Radical Batteries and Organic Redox Flow Batteries

Erik Schroeter et al.

Summary: This study investigates an all-organic Nernstian potential-driven redox targeting system that combines a single-electrode material from organic radical batteries with a single redox couple of an aqueous, organic redox flow battery. The experimental results demonstrate that 78-90% of the theoretical capacity of the electrode material from the organic radical battery can be addressed when it is used as the redox target in the electrolyte tank of an operating aqueous organic redox flow battery.

Stability of TMA-TEMPO-based aqueous electrolytes for redox-flow batteries

Oliver Nolte et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fade rate of N,N,N-2,2,6,6-heptamethylpiperidinyloxy-4-ammonium chloride (TMA-TEMPO) in correlation with temperature and time through battery experiments. The main cause of capacity decay is the deactivation of the oxidized TMA-TEMPO. The results provide insights for the development of a use-oriented cycling program.

Structural alterations on the TEMPO scaffold and their impact on the performance as active materials for redox flow batteries

Philip Rohland et al.

Summary: TMA-TEMPO is a promising active material for aqueous organic redox flow batteries due to its straightforward synthesis, reliable electrochemistry, fast kinetics, and high cycling stability. However, elevated temperatures and high states of charge can accelerate its decomposition. Hence, a comparative study on different TEMPO derivatives was conducted to investigate the structure-stability relationship and its impact on battery performance.

Rotation of a Charged Spin Probe in Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids

Jakov Slade et al.

Summary: X-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to study the rotational diffusion of the stable nitroxide Cat-1 in a series of room-temperature ionic liquids. The rotation of Cat-1 is anisotropic, with a preferential axis along the NO moiety, and its rotational correlation time can be described by a power-law functionality with a singular temperature. The apparent activation energy of rotation shows non-Arrhenius behavior, and a structural transition from homogeneously globular to spongelike is observed when the alkyl chain length is four carbons. The rotation of Cat-1 is well described by the Cohen-Turnbull free volume theory in all ionic liquids measured.

Reactivity of Peracetic Acid with Organic Compounds: A Critical Review

Juhee Kim et al.

Summary: Peracetic acid (PAA) is an emerging oxidant and disinfectant that has gained increasing attention in wastewater treatment, food, and medical industries. This paper comprehensively reviews the reactivity of PAA with various organic compounds, highlighting PAA as a highly reactive and selective electrophile with significant variability in second-order rate constants. The study identifies sulfur moieties as exhibiting exceptionally high reactivity towards PAA and suggests the formation of oxygen-added reaction products from PAA oxidation. Further research is needed to evaluate a broader range of compounds and their oxidation products and toxicity in wastewater treatment.
