Study on sensitivity of electric bus systems under simultaneous optimization of charging infrastructure and vehicle schedules

Miriam Stumpe et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the planning of charging locations and scheduling for electric bus systems, taking into account the interdependent nature of both problems by adopting a simultaneous optimization approach. Through sensitivity analysis of parameter uncertainty in complex planning situations, methodological guidance for decision makers is derived. The experiments show that identifying persistent structures for charging locations is not possible, emphasizing the sensitivity of electric bus system configurations to parameter changes.

An exact solution approach for an electric bus dispatch problem

Matias Alvo et al.

Summary: The study focuses on efficiently planning a bus dispatch operation within a public transport terminal with a mixed fleet and limited chargers, modeling the problem as an extension of the Vehicle Scheduling Problem and using a Benders' type decomposition approach to solve it. Feasibility cuts dynamically injected into the branch-and-bound tree help remove infeasible bus charging operations, with computational experiments showing the effectiveness of the approach over a single-stage model. Insights for planners include the marginal benefit of additional chargers or electric buses and the value added by a mixed fleet compared to a pure electric one.

Optimization of electric bus scheduling considering stochastic volatilities in trip travel time and energy consumption

Yiming Bie et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for vehicle scheduling on electric bus routes considering stochastic volatilities in trip energy consumption and travel time. By optimizing the scheduling plan, reasonable idle times can be generated to help stop the accumulation of stochastic volatilities. Collaboratively optimizing vehicle scheduling and charging plans can reduce fleet size and delays while meeting operational needs.

Summary: The recent trend in plug-in electric vehicles involves investing in public charging stations to allow for battery charging and potentially generate profits. Various scheduling algorithms are used to optimize the use of resources at the charging stations and cater to different customer requirements. A comprehensive model for maximizing profits at multi-service charging stations is introduced, along with a mixed-integer linear programming problem for scheduling vehicle charging and discharging. Simulation results show increased profit and reduced vehicle delay with an increase in battery swapping requests.
