Dairy versus other saturated fats source and cardiometabolic risk markers: Systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Camila Duarte et al.

Summary: Dairy intake appears to have a protective effect on some cardiovascular risk factors, particularly reducing total cholesterol, waist circumference, and increasing HDL cholesterol. However, it can also lead to increases in LDL and triglycerides, although these changes are minimal. The effect of dairy on serum lipids varies depending on the type of dairy product used, and compared to other animal sources of SFA, dairy products seem to improve metabolic parameters.

Dairy consumption, plasma metabolites, and risk of type 2 diabetes

Jean-Philippe Drouin-Chartier et al.

Summary: Epidemiologic studies have shown an inverse association between dairy consumption and the risk of type 2 diabetes. This study identified 38 metabolites associated with total dairy intake, with three metabolites consistently linked to different dairy subtypes. A higher score based on these identified metabolites was associated with a lower risk of T2D in both Spanish and US populations.

Microbiota and Metabolite Modifications after Dietary Exclusion of Dairy Products and Reduced Consumption of Fermented Food in Young and Older Men

Jinyoung Kim et al.

Summary: This study found that excluding dairy products and limiting fermented food consumption for 19 days had significant effects on gut microbiota composition and blood metabolites in both young and older adult men, with changes such as increased levels of Akkermansia muciniphila and decreased levels of bacteria in the Clostridiales order. The intervention also resulted in lower fasting levels of glucose and insulin, as well as decreased HDL and LDL cholesterol levels, with dairy fat intake being positively associated with changes in HDL cholesterol. The impact of the dietary restrictions on these outcomes was more pronounced than the effect of age.

Evaluating the Robustness of Biomarkers of Dairy Food Intake in a Free-Living Population Using Single- and Multi-Marker Approaches

Katherine J. Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the robustness of previously-identified biomarkers for dairy foods in a free-living cohort in the Netherlands. Multi-marker models better captured the subtle differences for milk and cheese consumption compared to single-marker models, while no significant associations were observed for yogurt intake. Further examination of the validity of these biomarkers may improve estimates of dairy food intake and help reach a clearer consensus on their health impacts.
