The Study on Safety in Hospitals in the Region of Madrid (ESHMAD) design: Screening and analysis of incidents and adverse events

Summary: The ESHMAD protocol aims to estimate the prevalence of adverse events in public hospitals in the Region of Madrid and the training of trainers strategy facilitated the spread of the research methodology among participants. The study involved 34 public hospitals with more than 10,000 hospitalisations aggregate capacity and 72 coordinators enrolled in the training workshops. A pilot study in an Internal Medicine Unit showed that 45.2% patients had at least one positive event from the screening, with 48.1% identified as truly adverse events.
