Multi-omics analysis to reveal disorders of cell metabolism and integrin signaling pathways induced by PM2.5

Xiaoyao Song et al.

Summary: This study integrated cytotoxicity, component profiling, metabolomics, and proteomics data to understand the mechanisms of PM2.5-induced cytotoxicity in human bronchial epithelial cells. PM2.5 was found to cause cell cycle arrest, calcium influx, cell damage, and apoptosis, with heavy metals and PAHs in PM2.5 correlating with intracellular ROS levels. Metabolomics and proteomics analysis revealed significant alterations in metabolic processes, while PM2.5 was shown to inhibit the integrin signaling pathway, affecting cell cycle progression, metabolism, and apoptosis.

Health Effects of Long-Term Exposure to Ambient PM2.5 in Asia-Pacific: a Systematic Review of Cohort Studies

Zhengyu Yang et al.

Summary: This systematic review summarizes the existing evidence from cohort studies on the health effects of long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 in the Asia-Pacific region. The review found consistent associations between long-term PM2.5 exposure and increased all-cause/non-accidental and cardiovascular mortality, as well as the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, kidney diseases, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Limited evidence was found for other health effects. Inequalities were identified in the associations between PM2.5 and health. Further studies are needed to assess the health effects of long-term PM2.5 exposure in understudied regions and on mortality and risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus, renal diseases, dementia, and lung cancer, as well as to investigate the inequalities in PM2.5-health associations. Study design, particularly exposure assessment methods, should be improved.

Summary: This study identified that exposure to PM2.5, smoking history, passive smoking history, male sex, BMI < 18.5 kg/m(2), exposure to biomass burning emissions, childhood respiratory infections, residence, and a family history of respiratory diseases were risk factors for COPD in the Chinese population. Early prevention of COPD could be achieved by addressing these factors.

Long-term PM2.5 exposure and survival among cardiovascular disease patients in Beijing, China

Dandan Xu et al.

Summary: This study found that long-term exposure to PM2.5 increased mortality among post-CVD patients, particularly for cardiovascular-related deaths and myocardial infarction. Patients with CVD are more susceptible to the effects of PM2.5 compared to the general population. Increased attention to the management of CVD patients is needed in light of these findings.

Emerging Role of Extracellular Vesicles and Cellular Communication in Metastasis

Aisling Forder et al.

Summary: Communication between cancer cells and stromal cells through extracellular vesicles plays a key role in promoting metastasis. Tumor-secreted EVs induce a pro-tumorigenic phenotype in non-malignant cells of the stroma, driving metastasis through various mechanisms. Targeting these EV-mediated signaling pathways may have therapeutic potential for developing biomarkers and novel treatment strategies.

Extracellular vesicles in cancer progression

Angelica Ortiz

Summary: Aggressive cancer cells release extracellular vesicles with higher protein content, which downregulate type I interferon receptor subunit 1 and impact the expression of interferon stimulated genes. Inhibiting the uptake of extracellular vesicles and developing strategies to suppress disease progression are crucial in combating cancer metastasis.
