Water quality assessment of rivers in Lake Chaohu Basin (China) using water quality index

Zhaoshi Wu et al.

Summary: This study assessed the water quality in the rivers of Lake Chaohu Basin, finding a moderate overall water quality state with significant seasonal variations. Three distinct groups were identified based on 15 environmental parameters. The minimum water quality index (WQI(min)), consisting of 5 crucial parameters, showed no significant difference from the WQI based on all parameters and has the potential for universal application in river water quality assessment in different basins.

A review of water quality index models and their use for assessing surface water quality

Md. Galal Uddin et al.

Summary: The water quality index (WQI) model is a popular tool for evaluating surface water quality, converting extensive data into a single index. While commonly used, the model faces issues such as specificity to regional guidelines and uncertainty in data conversion. This paper compares commonly used WQI models and discusses issues affecting model accuracy.

Spatial scale effects of landscape metrics on stream water quality and their seasonal changes

Jianhong Wu et al.

Summary: The physiography and land use patterns influence stream water quality by affecting non-point source pollution process. Quantitative analysis of landscape metrics scale effect and determination of abrupt change-point in the relationship between stream water quality and metrics is essential for landscape planning of water quality protection. Results showed that landscape configuration metrics had the greatest impact on stream water quality, with physiographic metrics having the most significant spatial scale effect.

Bio-assessment of wastewater effluent conditions with algal pollution index and multivariate approach

Abuzer Celekli et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the responses of algal species to stressors in a wastewater treatment plant to assess the healthy sustainability of wastewater effluent quality. The results suggest that crucial algae-stressors relationships can be used as an assessment tool to ensure sustainable water supply for irrigation purposes in arid and semi-arid regions.

Impact of geology and anthropogenic activities over the water quality with emphasis on fluoride in water scarce Lalitpur district of Bundelkhand region, India

Neeraj Pant et al.

Summary: A study in the Bundelkhand region of India revealed that groundwater quality is influenced by rock weathering and anthropogenic activities, with fluoride concentration having a greater impact on infants and children. The origin of groundwater is local precipitation with evaporative enrichment, and variations in ion concentration along groundwater flow direction indicate control by hydrogeological attributes.

Spatial variation in ciliate communities with respect to water quality in the Delhi NCR stretch of River Yamuna, India

Harpreet Kaur et al.

Summary: The River Yamuna's water quality has been drastically affected by human activities, with ciliate communities identified as effective bioindicators of pollution. As the river enters the Delhi NCR region, water quality deteriorates significantly, leading to differences in ciliate species diversity along the river.

Imprints of COVID-19 lockdown on the surface water quality of Bagmati river basin, Nepal

Ramesh Raj Pant et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound impacts on global freshwater ecosystems and human life, leading to improved environmental quality and creating opportunities for ecosystem restoration. A study in the urban-based Bagmati River Basin in Nepal showed that the quality of surface water improved during lockdown, with increased dissolved oxygen levels and decreased levels of biological and chemical oxygen demand. This study confirms that limiting anthropic activities can lead to the remarkable recovery of degraded aquatic ecosystems.

Summary: Groundwater is the main water source for populations in arid and semiarid regions globally. This study assessed groundwater quality in the Araripe Sedimentary Basin in Brazil, finding certain key variables exceeded regulatory limits in areas affected by human activities. The use of water quality tools and indices can help prioritize areas for mitigation and monitoring actions to manage groundwater resources effectively.
