Naturally occurring potentially toxic elements in groundwater from the volcanic landscape around Mount Meru, Arusha, Tanzania and their potential health hazard

Ines Tomasek et al.

Summary: This study reports the presence of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in groundwater in the populated flanks of Mt. Meru in the East African Rift Valley, with most elements within acceptable limits for drinking water. However, some samples exceeded the WHO tolerance limits for Uranium and Molybdenum. The study emphasizes the need to expand monitoring of elements in regional groundwater and more routine measurement of PTEs for water safety and effective management.

Geochemical evolution and tracing of groundwater salinization using different ionic ratios, multivariate statistical and geochemical modeling approaches in a typical semi-arid basin

Emmanuel Daanoba Sunkari et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using different ionic ratios, multivariate statistical, and geochemical modeling approaches to understand groundwater evolution and trace salinization in semi-arid basin aquifers. Groundwater chemistry is primarily controlled by water-rock interaction, ion exchange reactions, weathering, salinization, and anthropogenic activities. The prevalence of salinization in the aquifer system, especially in the southwestern part of the basin, is revealed through different ionic ratio plots and spatial distribution maps.

The Integration of Multivariate Statistical Approaches, Hyperspectral Reflectance, and Data-Driven Modeling for Assessing the Quality and Suitability of Groundwater for Irrigation

Mosaad Khadr et al.

Summary: This study utilized multivariate analysis, calculation of irrigation water quality indices, and ground-based remote sensing data to evaluate the quality of groundwater samples. Results showed that groundwater in the Central Nile Delta was generally suitable for irrigation, while that in the Western Desert had limitations due to potential salinity and alkalinity issues in the long term. High correlation values were found between the six IWQIs and the spectral reflectance at specific wavelength intervals. The ANFIS model demonstrated higher accuracy in evaluating IWQIs compared to the SVMR model.

Hydrogeochemical characteristics and groundwater quality assessment in the plain area of Yarkant River Basin in Xinjiang, PR China

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the characteristics and factors affecting the groundwater quality for drinking in shallow aquifers in the plain area of Yarkant River Basin in Xinjiang using WQI, geostatistics, and geochemical methods. The results showed that the groundwater quality varied in different aquifer types, with factors such as dominant water types and river distance influencing the quality. The deterioration of groundwater quality was attributed to natural and anthropogenic activities, as well as the dissolution of evaporite minerals and ion exchange process.

Risk-Based Decision-Support Groundwater Modeling for the Lower San Antonio River Basin, Texas, USA

Linzy K. Foster et al.

Summary: A numerical surface-water/groundwater model was developed to evaluate responses of low base flows and groundwater levels in the lower San Antonio River Basin under conditions of reduced recharge and increased groundwater withdrawals. Results suggest that groundwater contributions to surface water during low flow periods may decrease from 6% to 25% over an 8-year planning period, with a corresponding reduction in recharge and increase in groundwater pumping.

Reza Aghlmand et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the quality of urban water distribution network in northwestern Iran using water quality index (WQI) method, investigated important trace elements, and assessed health risks for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic elements. The results showed that the water quality for drinking consumption in the study region was in the good water quality class, with low risk for non-carcinogenic substances but elevated levels of certain carcinogenic elements. The findings can be utilized for efficient water management and human health protection programs in the area.

Summary: The scientometric analysis based on the Scopus database revealed a significant increase in research activities on potentially toxic elements in groundwater since 2000. While arsenic and lead are the most studied PTEs, research on other elements is also showing a continuous upward trend. The USA and China are the two principal countries making the most significant contributions in terms of research output, institutions, and funding sponsors.

The impact of different stages of water treatment process on the number of selected bacteria

Ewa Wysowska et al.

Summary: The study found that soil infiltration is highly effective in removing pathogenic bacteria and may serve as an alternative to intermediate water treatment processes like filtration on DynaSand filters. There is also a high level of microbial removal at the intermediate stage of water treatment, such as preliminary coagulation in settling tanks and filtration on sand filters. Subsequent technological processes, such as disinfection with UV light and gas chlorine, or ozonation and filtration on activated carbon, resulted in a 100% reduction in microbiological pathogens in the water analyzed, which is crucial for ensuring the safety of drinking water.
