Sajjad Hussain et al.

Summary: Pakistan is among the top 50 countries estimated to face serious agricultural and food shortages due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study evaluated the impact of COVID-19 on food supply chains and agriculture in Punjab, Pakistan, using space-time scan statistics. The findings showed that disruptions in the supply chain could result in difficulties for farmers to access markets and lead to a decline in production and sales of crops and livestock.

Investigating the Impact of Land Use/Land Cover Change on Present and Future Land Surface Temperature (LST) of Chittagong, Bangladesh

Shahriar Abdullah et al.

Summary: Urbanization has a significant impact on microclimate and investigating the relationship between urbanization pattern and land surface temperature (LST) is crucial. The study in Chittagong reveals that built-up areas have the highest temperature while waterbodies have the lowest. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) are negatively correlated with temperature, whereas Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) and Bare Soil Index (BSI) show positive correlation. The predicted LST indicates that temperature may reach a critical state by 2050 if the current trend of urban growth continues.

Characterizing Spatiotemporal Variations in the Urban Thermal Environment Related to Land Cover Changes in Karachi, Pakistan, from 2000 to 2020

Muhammad Fahad Baqa et al.

Summary: This study explored the impact of land use/land cover changes on the urban thermal environment in the tropical megacity, Karachi, Pakistan. The results indicated that the increase in built-up areas led to higher land surface temperatures, and different land cover types exhibited varying degrees of heat island effects. The normalized difference built-up index had a significant influence on land surface temperature. Large parks with medium- and high-density vegetation played a crucial role in regulating the thermal environment.

Urbanization Contributes Little to Global Warming but Substantially Intensifies Local and Regional Land Surface Warming

Decheng Zhou et al.

Summary: Increasing urbanization leads to the urban heat island effect and worsens health risks from heat waves due to global warming. Using high-resolution satellite observations, this study quantifies the warming effects of urbanization at local, regional, and global scales. The results show that 88% of urbanized areas globally experience local warming effects, while the remaining areas have cooling effects on average. The study also highlights the substantial regional warming effects of urbanization, particularly in eastern China, the eastern United States, and Europe. Furthermore, global urban expansion is responsible for over three-quarters of the urban heat island effect, and its impact is projected to increase by 50% to 200% by the end of the century.

Summary: This study uses Google Earth Engine and geo-information modeling techniques to investigate land use and land surface temperature changes in Pakistan over the past 30 years. The results show a significant increase in impervious surface due to the transition from rangeland and agriculture to built-up areas, leading to a rise in land surface temperature. Kasur city experiences the most significant increase in land surface temperature among the evaluated cities.

Assessment of changes in land use, land cover, and land surface temperature in the mangrove forest of Sundarbans, northeast coast of India

Sandeep Thakur et al.

Summary: The study observed a decrease in plantation, mangrove swamp, and agricultural land areas since 2000, while an increase in sand beaches, waterlogged areas, mudflats, rivers, and agriculture areas. The NDVI values for mangrove forests and plantations decreased, while river, aquaculture, agricultural, and open scrub areas had higher values. The land surface temperature increase was highest over settlements, followed by sand beaches, mudflats, aquaculture, mangrove forests, rivers, plantations, waterlogged areas, and agricultural fields.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatio-temporal changes in habitat quality over the past four decades and predicted trends for the next three decades, finding a decrease in areas with high habitat quality indicators and an increase in areas with poor habitat quality. Anthropogenic land use/land cover expansion was identified as a major contributor to the decline in habitat quality. The study also highlighted the importance of reducing habitat modifications and restoring degraded natural habitats to maintain biodiversity in the area.

EFFECT OF PLANT GROWTH PROMOTING BACTERIA AND DROUGHT ON SPRING MAIZE (ZEA MAYS L.)

Muhammad Mubeen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of two different PGPR species on maize under drought stress, with Pseudomonas putida showing more effectiveness in increasing chlorophyll content and total dry matter (TDM), crop growth rate (CGR), grain yield, and water use efficiency compared to Bacillus cereus. Application of PGPR in the rhizosphere and foliar spray were found to be more efficient for grain yield and WUE for TDM, with foliar spray showing the highest harvest index. It is recommended to use foliar spray of PGPR at 3-4 leaf stage for higher maize yields.
