Controlling the Surface Oxidation of Cu Nanowires Improves Their Catalytic Selectivity and Stability toward C2+ Products in CO2 Reduction

Zhiheng Lyu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that controlling the surface oxidation of copper nanowires can greatly improve their C2+ selectivity and stability in the electrochemical reduction of CO2. The formation of a relatively thick, smooth oxide sheath can increase surface roughness and generate defects and cavities, leading to high yields of C2+ products and improved catalytic stability.

Enhancing carbon dioxide gas-diffusion electrolysis by creating a hydrophobic catalyst microenvironment

Zhuo Xing et al.

Summary: The study found that a hydrophobic microenvironment can significantly enhance CO2 gas-diffusion electrolysis efficiency. Furthermore, a balanced gas/liquid microenvironment can reduce the diffusion layer thickness, accelerate CO2 mass transport, and increase CO2 local concentration for electrolysis.

Earth-abundant elements a sustainable solution for electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate

Ana S. Fajardo et al.

Summary: The study reveals that carbon (as boron-doped diamond) and tin have the highest average selectivity towards nitrogen gas evolution (55% and 64% respectively), outperforming platinum (Pt) which only has 1% selectivity, while having comparable energy efficiencies per order removal of nitrate. Therefore, earth-abundant elements for electrocatalysis show tremendous promise as innovative, low-cost, and sustainable processes for the water treatment marketplace.

Electrochemical Ammonia Recovery from Anaerobic Centrate Using a Nickel-Functionalized Activated Carbon Membrane Electrode

Kyoung-Yeol Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated an activated carbon (AC)-based membrane electrode functionalized with nickel for electrochemical recovery of NH3 from synthetic anaerobic centrate. As the recovery solution became more acidic, NH3-N fluxes and energy consumptions improved. Increasing PVDF loadings did not impact the electrochemical performances of the Ni/AC-PVDF electrode.
