Origins of Electron-Transfer Regime in Persulfate-Based Nonradical Oxidation Processes

Wei Ren et al.

Summary: This review discusses the use of persulfate-based nonradical oxidation processes (PS-NOPs) in wastewater purification, focusing on recent advances in nonradical electron-transfer regimes, including design of catalysts, in situ/operando characterization/analytics, and understanding the origins of electron-transfer mechanisms. The study found that persulfate is activated by a catalyst to form surface activated complexes, which interact directly or indirectly with target pollutants for oxidation.

Hydrogen atom abstraction mechanism for organic compound oxidation by acetylperoxyl radical in Co(II)/peracetic acid activation system

Penghui Du et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the reaction mechanism of the acetylperoxyl radical (CH3CO3 center dot)-driven oxidation of phenol. The results showed that hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) is the most favorable route in the initial step of CH3CO3 center dot-driven phenol oxidation. The generated phenoxy radicals further undergo dimerization or react with CH3CO3 center dot to produce different products.

Degradation of diclofenac by Fe(II)-activated peracetic acid

Zhenran Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Fe(II)/PAA system can effectively remove diclofenac sodium in neutral condition, with removal rate influenced by operational parameters. Natural organic matter has a negative impact on DCF degradation, and multiple degradation pathways may exist based on detected reaction products.

Applying a novel advanced oxidation process of activated peracetic acid by CoFe2O4 to efficiently degrade sulfamethoxazole

Jingwen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, peracetic acid (PAA) was successfully activated by cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4/PAA) to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The best removal efficiency of SMX was achieved under neutral conditions with 200 μM PAA and 0.1 g/L CoFe2O4. The redox cycle of Co3+/ Co2+ on the CoFe2O4 surface dominated PAA activation, producing organic radicals that accounted for SMX degradation. The potential applicability of the CoFe2O4/PAA system in degrading micro-organic pollutants was suggested based on the results of this study.

Toward Selective Oxidation of Contaminants in Aqueous Systems

Zhichao Yang et al.

Summary: The presence of diverse pollutants in water poses a threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems globally. Chemical oxidation has been an effective technology for pollutant destruction, but faces challenges in treating emerging micro-pollutants. There are various examples of selective oxidation strategies in water treatment, but a systematic understanding of selectivity origins and rational catalyst design is still lacking.

Revisiting the Graphitized Nanodiamond-Mediated Activation of Peroxymonosulfate: Singlet Oxygenation versus Electron Transfer

Penghui Shao et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical studies show that the activity of nanodiamonds is influenced by the degree of graphitization, with intensified surface graphitization altering the degradation mechanism. A self-constructed time-resolved phosphorescence detection system was used for the first time to provide direct evidence of singlet oxygen production in the PMS-based system.

HCO3-/CO32- enhanced degradation of diclofenac by Cu(II)-activated peracetic acid: Efficiency and mechanism

Zhenran Wang et al.

Summary: Cu(II)/peracetic acid system efficiently removes DCF in the presence of bicarbonate and carbonate, with the concentration ratio of HCO3- to CO32- significantly affecting DCF removal. Organic radicals were identified as the main factor responsible for DCF degradation. Optimization of operational parameters and investigation of common water matrix effects allowed for the proposal of five probable degradation pathways of DCF.

Chlorination decreases acute toxicity of iodophenols through the formation of iodate and chlorinated aliphatic disinfection byproducts

Xian-Shi Wang et al.

Summary: HOCl was found to effectively convert iodinated phenolic disinfection byproducts into non-toxic iodate and less toxic chlorinated aliphatic DBPs, reducing the acute toxicity of water samples containing iodophenols. Further investigations on the transformation and toxicity alteration of emerging DBPs during chlorination/booster chlorination are warranted due to the widespread use of chlorine as a disinfectant.

Enhanced diclofenac elimination in Fe(II)/peracetic acid process by promoting Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle with ABTS as electron shuttle

Jinbin Lin et al.

Summary: Introduced ABTS as an electron shuttle in Fe(II)/PAA process significantly enhanced the oxidation capacity and efficiency for diclofenac elimination. ABTS(.+) was identified as the primary reactive species responsible for diclofenac degradation in the presence of Fe(II) and PAA, although other reactive species like (FeO2+)-O-IV and R-O-. also existed. The study proposed two possible degradation pathways of diclofenac and demonstrated the potential application of ABTS/Fe(II)/PAA process in water treatment for micropollutant removal.

Summary: This study investigated an advanced oxidation process using peracetic acid (PAA) and ruthenium(III) (Ru(III)) to oxidize micropollutants in water. The results showed that at neutral pH, the PAA-Ru(III) system efficiently removed a wide range of pharmaceuticals, with Ru(III) playing a crucial role in activating PAA for micropollutant oxidation.

Insights into the oxidation of organic contaminants by Co(II) activated peracetic acid: The overlooked role of high-valent cobalt-oxo species

Banghai Liu et al.

Summary: The combination of Co(II) and PAA can generate Co(IV) under acidic conditions, with the oxidation mechanism being strongly influenced by solution pH. The presence of H2O2 competes with Co(IV) and reactive radicals, leading to a decline in catalytic performance. Co(IV) reacts readily with organic substances bearing electron-rich groups, reducing their biological toxicity.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2): A novel activator of peracetic acid for the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics

Jingwen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel advanced oxidation process using MoS2/PAA was applied to degrade sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), with sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the target SA. Results showed that under optimum pH conditions, the degradation efficiency of SMX exceeded 80% after 15 minutes of reaction. Increasing the dosages of PAA or MoS2 facilitated SMX degradation, while the presence of humic acids slowed down the removal of SMX.
