Enhanced secondary aerosol formation driven by excess ammonia during fog episodes in Delhi, India

Prodip Acharja et al.

Summary: The study in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) revealed the potential formation of secondary inorganic aerosols driven by excess ammonia in winter. The fine aerosols were mainly composed of chloride ions, nitrate ions, sulfate ions, and ammonium ions, with ammonia as the dominant neutralizer forming significant ammonium chloride. The predicted PM1 and PM2.5 pH values of the atmosphere were in good agreement with measurements.

Global, regional and national trends of atmospheric ammonia derived from a decadal (2008-2018) satellite record

Martin Van Damme et al.

Summary: The study utilized infrared satellite data to reveal a significant global increase in NH3 concentration over the past 11 years, driven primarily by regions in East Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe, with a decrease observed in southwestern India. National trends in NH3 emissions were analyzed in relation to changing factors such as anthropogenic and pyrogenic NH3 emissions, meteorological conditions, and sulfur and nitrogen oxides emissions impacting NH3 atmospheric lifetime. Additionally, a case study on the 'Dutch Nitrogen crisis' of 2019 in the Netherlands was conducted.

Validation of IASI Satellite Ammonia Observations at the Pixel Scale Using In Situ Vertical Profiles

Xuehui Guo et al.

Summary: The study found that there is a correlation and consistency between the satellite ammonia observations from IASI version 3 and in situ measurements of NH3 columns. However, the agreement degrades when larger spatiotemporal windows are used. Additionally, using different data sources to generate products slightly improves the overall agreement of IASI data sets. However, uncertainties still exist due to sampling artifacts of airborne NH3 instruments.

Contributions of Ammonia to High Concentrations of PM2.5 in an Urban Area

Junsu Park et al.

Summary: The study found that atmospheric ammonia significantly contributed to the formation of SNA during PM2.5 pollution episodes in urban areas through gas-to-particle conversion, especially under low temperature and high humidity conditions. The ratio of NH4+ to total NH3 increased with the concentration of PM2.5, indicating NH3 played an important role in SNA formation.

Analysis of atmospheric ammonia over South and East Asia based on the MOZART-4 model and its comparison with satellite and surface observations

Pooja Pawar et al.

Summary: Limited availability of atmospheric ammonia observations restricts our understanding of its spatial and temporal variability and ecosystem interactions. Utilizing the MOZART-4 model and satellite data, the study simulated and evaluated global NH3 distribution in 2010, identifying the northern region of India as an NH3 hotspot in Asia. While model simulations and satellite observations showed good agreement in South Asia and East Asia, the model tended to overestimate NH3 concentrations in South Asia compared to ground-based observations, with lower concentrations observed in East Asia likely due to rapid dissipation from acidic precursor gas emissions.
