Uneven development of the lead industry leads to regional differences in blood lead levels of children*

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the development of the lead industry is associated with children's blood lead levels in different regions of China. Economic development in leaded areas was linked to inequity in children's BLLs, while in areas without lead industries, there was little correlation between economic development and children's BLLs.

Urban contamination sources in tunnel dusts from Sa∼o Paulo city: Elemental and isotopic characterization

Renata Mendes Nory et al.

Summary: Analysis of elemental and isotopic composition of tunnel dusts collected from two tunnels in Sao Paulo city showed significant urban contamination by potentially toxic elements, with vehicular emissions being the main source. The dust collected from the tunnels was not significantly affected by external weather conditions.

Association of newborn blood lead concentration with neurodevelopment outcome in early infancy

Dolat Singh Shekhawat et al.

Summary: This study found a negative association between newborn umbilical cord blood lead concentration and early gross motor development in a mother-child population from Western Rajasthan, India. However, no associations were found with cognitive, language, gross motor, and social-emotional development. Regular intake of calcium supplements by mothers during the antenatal period was significantly associated with lower umbilical cord blood lead levels.

Measure-specific environmental benefits of air pollution control for coal-fired industrial boilers in China from 2015 to 2017

Kun Wang et al.

Summary: From 2015 to 2017, China implemented strong air pollution control measures for coal-fired industrial boilers, including elimination, promoting clean fuels, and updating air pollution control devices. Updating air pollution control devices was identified as the major measure to reduce air pollutants, accounting for more than 35% of emission reductions and mitigated concentration.

Radionuclide and trace metal accumulation in a variety of mosses used as bioindicators for atmospheric deposition

Xu Ren et al.

Summary: Mosses were analyzed for radionuclides and metal concentrations in different regions, revealing higher metal concentrations in mainland China compared to the Arctic region, likely due to lower industrial production and human activity in the Arctic. Principal component analysis and correlation results identified two radionuclide source types in mosses, from soil and atmospheric deposition.

Coordinated effects of air pollution control devices on PAH emissions in coal-fired power plants and industrial boilers

Xiaolin Wu et al.

Summary: Coal-fired power plants are significant sources of PAH emissions, with different air pollution control devices showing varying effects on PAH emissions. WESPs and LLT-ESPs were found to be effective in reducing PAH emissions, offering potential for adoption in other plants for PAH reduction.

Phasing in electric vehicles: Does policy focusing on operating emission achieve net zero emissions reduction objectives?

Kathryn G. Logan et al.

Summary: This study compared a simple operation emissions model (OPEM) with a life cycle analysis (LCA) approach to predict emissions from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in different vehicle scenarios. Results showed that OPEM predicted higher emissions in one of the scenarios compared to LCA.

Sources of atmospheric lead (Pb) after quarter century of phasing out of leaded gasoline in Bangkok, Thailand

Jariya Kayee et al.

Summary: After Thailand banned leaded gasoline in 1994, the atmospheric sources of lead have shifted from less radiogenic leaded gasoline exhaust and Chinese ore processing to more radiogenic unleaded gasoline and diesel exhaust, as well as coal combustion emissions.

Blood lead levels and their associated risk factors in Chinese adults from 1980 to 2018

Yanan Li et al.

Summary: The study showed that blood lead levels in Chinese adults have been declining in recent decades, mainly due to the effective implementation of lead phase-out policies in gasoline. Male, smokers, and individuals over 40 years old tend to have higher BLLs, and there is a significant correlation between air and soil pollution and adult BLLs. Therefore, strict lead control strategies and regular monitoring are necessary to maintain low BLLs in the population.

Taking into account greenhouse gas emissions of electric vehicles for transportation de-carbonization

Yu Gan et al.

Summary: The development of plug-in electric vehicle market is influenced by international regulations, including super-credits and leakage effects. Due to these effects, sales of plug-in electric vehicles in China, the U.S., and the EU will result in greenhouse gas emissions increases of over 1 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Future regulatory designs should incentivize the development of new technologies while also reducing the risk of emissions increases elsewhere.

Strong evidence for the continued contribution of lead deposited during the 20th century to the atmospheric environment in London of today

Eleonore Resongles et al.

Summary: Although leaded gasoline has been banned, lead is still significantly present in airborne particles in large cities such as London. The isotopic composition of lead in airborne particles suggests that lead from gasoline combustion remains a major contributor to lead pollution in London. Data collected over the past decade shows consistent levels of lead, indicating a persistent source of lead pollution in urban environments.

Zhenghua Tao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the sources of atmospheric lead in Beijing, identifying anthropogenic sources contributing approximately 85% annually, with natural sources accounting for the rest of 15%. Natural sources contributed around 9.4% in spring, 29.7% in summer, 16.0% in autumn, and 6.1% in winter, indicating a potentially higher contribution of natural sources on clear days.
