Stabilized green rusts for aqueous Cr(VI) removal: Fast kinetics, high iron utilization rate and anti-acidification

Jinxin Zhao et al.

Summary: Green rusts (GRs) were stabilized by selected regents and used for Cr(VI) removal. The stabilized GR showed suppressed release of Fe(II) and efficient transfer of Cr(VI) into stable Cr(III)-Fe(III) precipitates.

Advances in metal(loid) oxyanion removal by zerovalent iron: Kinetics, pathways, and mechanisms

Xiao Wang et al.

Summary: Metal(loid) oxyanions in groundwater, surface water, and wastewater can have harmful effects due to their high toxicity and lack of degradation. Zerovalent iron (ZVI) has been widely studied for the removal of these contaminants, with mechanisms including redox reactions, adsorption, precipitation, and coprecipitation. The corrosion of ZVI leads to the formation of iron oxyhydrides that sequester metal(loid) oxyanions, contributing to their removal from different types of water sources.

Arsenic removal from natural groundwater using 'green rust': Solid phase stability and contaminant fate

Jeffrey Paulo H. Perez et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of green rust (GR) in treating arsenic (As) contamination in groundwater. Lowering temperature or adding arsenic can increase the stability of GR, reducing the solubility of arsenic and effectively immobilizing it in the mineral. This ultimately improves the efficiency of arsenic remediation.

Enhancement of the heterogeneous adsorption and incorporation of uranium(VI) caused by the intercalation of beta-cyclodextrin into the green rust

Tao Huang et al.

Summary: The intercalation of beta-cyclodextrin into green rust layers resulted in the synthesis of new materials (beta-CD GRs) with high uranium (VI) sorption capacity. The molar ratios of Fe(II) to Fe(III) and beta-CD GR to Fe(II) + Fe(III) significantly influenced the synthesis process. Both strong acidity and alkalinity adversely affected the adsorption of beta-CD GRs towards U(VI).

Stainless steel corrosion via direct iron-to-microbe electron transfer by Geobacter species

Hai-Yan Tang et al.

Summary: This study found that the mechanism of microbial corrosion of stainless steel is significantly different from that of pure iron. Unlike in the corrosion of pure iron, H-2 is not abiotically produced from stainless steel during microbial corrosion, and direct iron-to-microbe electron transfer is a feasible route for stainless steel corrosion.

Mechanistic Study of Ni(II) Sorption by Green Rust Sulfate

Evert J. Elzinga

Summary: The study found that Ni(II) is incorporated into the lattice of green rust sulfate through recrystallization and exchange reactions, forming secondary Ni(II)/Fe(II)-Fe(III)-LDH phases with higher stability. Further research is needed to investigate the mechanisms involved and assess the sorptive reactivity of green rust with other trace metal species.

Summary: This study investigated the reactivity of two types of synthesized green rusts in reducing chlorate and nitrate, with the FeII/FeIII ratio in the rust influencing reaction rates. Different ratios of green rust showed varying reactivity in transforming oxyanions. pH also played a significant role in the transformation process, affecting the reaction rate constants.
