Risk Assessment of Cd, Cu, and Pb from the consumption of hunted meat: red-legged partridge and wild rabbit

Jesus Salvador Sevillano-Morales et al.

Summary: By analyzing the content of Cd, Cu, and Pb in wild rabbit and red-legged partridge meat, it was found that the risk of exposure to these metals is relatively low for hunters, but may be higher for this population. Moderate or low consumption of these species' meat does not present a significant public health risk. However, high Pb content in the meat and high consumption may pose greater health risks to hunters.

Radioactivity of soil in Croatia II: 137Cs, 40K, and absorbed dose rate

Marko Sostaric et al.

Summary: This study collected uncultivated soil samples from all over Croatia and measured their radionuclide activity concentrations, focusing on K-40 and Cs-137 to complement existing data on Th-232 and U-238 decay chains. Cs-137 concentrations tended to increase with altitude, annual precipitation, and vegetation density, with the Cs-137 and K concentration ratio being lowest in agriculturally important areas in the east of the Pannonian region. The external exposure to ionising radiation from soil was generally highest in the Dinaric region and Istrian Peninsula according to the calculated absorbed dose rates.

Radioactivity of soil in Croatia I: naturally occurring decay chains

Marko Sostaric et al.

Summary: The study focused on radioactivity levels in soil across different regions of Croatia, with the highest concentrations found in the Dinaric region and the lowest in the Pannonian region. The research also highlighted the potential implications of high Ra-226 concentrations in the soil of the Dinaric region, which could lead to enhanced Radon-222 emanation. Additionally, areas with dense vegetation showed elevated Pb-210 concentrations, likely due to atmospheric deposition on plant surfaces and subsequent decomposition on the ground.

Current and historical nephric and hepatic mercury concentrations in terrestrial mammals in Poland and other European countries

Elzbieta Kalisinska et al.

Summary: This study investigated the total mercury burden in three mustelids inhabiting European floodplains and suggested that European badgers may be recommended as bioindicators of mercury soil contamination. Analysis of hepatic and nephric THg concentrations in terrestrial mammals revealed a significant decrease in Hg contamination since 2000 in 12 out of 21 cases, indicating a reduction in Hg pollution in wild mammals such as the Eurasian otter.
