Uncertainty in critical source area predictions from watershed-scale hydrologic models

Grey R. Evenson et al.

Summary: Using an ensemble of models to simulate critical source areas (CSAs) at the watershed scale, the study found that CSA locations are highly uncertain and may vary substantially across models, with only a subset of CSAs being consistently identified by different models.

Evaluating management options to reduce Lake Erie algal blooms using an ensemble of watershed models

Jay F. Martin et al.

Summary: To reduce harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie, best management practices need to be implemented to decrease nutrient loading from upstream sources. Row crop agriculture dominates the land use in the Western Lake Erie Basin, requiring efforts to mitigate nutrient loads from agricultural systems. Research shows that subsurface placement of phosphorus fertilizers, cover crops, riparian buffers, and wetlands are among the most effective management options.

Improving and calibrating channel erosion simulation in the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model

Tian Guo et al.

Summary: The WEPP model has been widely used for assessing the impacts of management practices and climate change on runoff and soil loss, but the representation of channel erosion processes has not been significantly improved since its release. By updating the channel erodibility and critical shear stress values, the modified WEPP model showed improved performance in simulating watershed-scale event-based hydrology and soil erosion. Continued improvement in process-based models like WEPP is necessary to better evaluate the effectiveness of soil conservation practices on hydrology and erosion.

Evaluation of Costs and Efficiencies of Urban Low Impact Development (LID) Practices on Stormwater Runoff and Soil Erosion in an Urban Watershed Using the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) Model

Tian Guo et al.

Summary: Storm events and soil erosion can have negative impacts on various aspects of urban systems, but Urban Low Impact Development practices can help manage stormwater runoff and improve water quality. The study calibrated the WEPP model to simulate streamflow discharge in Austin, Texas and found that native planting in different scenarios could significantly reduce stormwater runoff and sediment losses at a low cost.
