Modelling the Fate of Pesticide Transformation Products From Plot to Catchment Scale-State of Knowledge and Future Challenges

Matthias Gassmann

Summary: This study documented and analyzed peer-reviewed applications of 10 models with 20 publications on the formation and transport of transformation products (TP) of pesticides in the aquatic environment. The reviewed models significantly differ in complexity regarding TP formation rate and pathways, with erroneous substance transport identified as a major reason for model failure to reproduce TP concentrations. The study recommended updates to the models to reflect current knowledge, integration of models for comprehensive TP fate assessment, and development of catchment scale models capable of simulating TP fate.

Isotope fractionation of micropollutants during large-volume extraction: heads-up from a critical method evaluation for atrazine, desethylatrazine and 2,6-dichlorobenzamide at low ng/L concentrations in groundwater

Aileen Melsbach et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of isotope ratio measurements of frequently detected micropollutants after enrichment from large water volumes by solid-phase extraction and HPLC clean-up. Artefacts of isotope discrimination were found to depend on factors like organic matter content and extraction volume, highlighting the importance of a careful method evaluation before reliable CSIA.

Triple-Element Compound-Specific Stable Isotope Analysis (3D-CSIA): Added Value of Cl Isotope Ratios to Assess Herbicide Degradation

Clara Torrento et al.

Summary: Although multielement isotope fractionation studies have been well-established for point-source pollution, they are only emerging for diffuse pollution by micropollutants like pesticides. This study found that chlorine isotope fractionation can be a robust indicator of chloroacetanilide degradation, with distinct patterns observed for different degradation pathways. The 3D isotope approach allows for differentiation of transformations that may not be distinguishable based on C and N isotope data alone.

Plants affect the dissipation and leaching of anilide pesticides in soil mesocosms: Insights from compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA)

Paula Perez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study found that leaching, dissipation, and degradation of pesticides in different types of soil mesocosms can be influenced by the planted or unplanted conditions, with planted mesocosms favoring pesticide degradation. Compound-specific stable isotope analysis showed that biodegradation of pesticides in soil-plant systems mainly occurred in the soil solution leached after rainfall events.

Evaluation of MNA in A Chlorinated Solvents-Contaminated Aquifer Using Reactive Transport Modeling Coupled with Isotopic Fractionation Analysis

Matteo Antelmi et al.

Summary: Groundwater contamination by chlorinated hydrocarbons is a worldwide problem with challenges in remediation processes. In Italy, water quality limits during cleanup are defined by Legislative Decree 152/06. In situ bioremediation is gaining importance due to affordability and effectiveness, supported by numerical modeling and isotopic fractionation-reactive transport models to demonstrate natural attenuation processes.

Phase Transfer and Biodegradation of Pesticides in Water-Sediment Systems Explored by Compound-Specific Isotope Analysis and Conceptual Modeling

Boris Droz et al.

Summary: Current approaches are often limited to evaluating the contribution of pesticide dissipation processes in water-sediment systems. Compound-specific isotope analysis emphasized the importance of pesticide degradation in the water phase. Combining CSIA with high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry for the identification of transformation products can improve the interpretation of pesticide dissipation in water-sediment systems.

Mass-Transfer-Limited Biodegradation at Low Concentrations.Evidence from Reactive Transport Modeling of Isotope Profiles in a Bench-Scale Aquifer

Fengchao Sun et al.

Summary: Research shows that isotope fractionation decreases significantly when organic pollutant concentrations fall below a certain level, indicating that membrane transfer is slow relative to enzyme turnover. By using a reactive transport model, it is possible to identify mass transfer limitations in biodegradation, especially at low concentrations.

Methodological Advances to Study Contaminant Biotransformation: New Prospects for Understanding and Reducing Environmental Persistence?

Kathrin Fenner et al.

Summary: Complex microbial communities in environmental systems play a crucial role in detoxifying chemical contaminants by transforming them into less harmful forms, but understanding of biotransformation processes for emerging contaminants at low concentrations is still limited. Advanced approaches to reducing environmental exposure to contaminants will rely on understanding the links between contaminant removal, key driving agents of biotransformation at low concentrations, and environmental conditions affecting microbial presence and activity.
