Sustainable microalgal biomass valorization to bioenergy: Key challenges and future perspectives

Additionally, the removal of micropollutants and heavy metals by microalgal cells and the valorization of digestate for agricultural reuse are discussed.

This review comprehensively discusses these challenges and proposes biofilm-based technology as a means to overcome these barriers. Additionally, the synergistic potential of bacteria and microalgae for xenobiotic removal is explored, highlighting photo degradation, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation as primary mechanisms. The review also emphasizes the importance of algal biomass harvesting for bioenergy recovery, improved metabolism, and excess nutrient removal, as well as the techno-economic limitations and CO2 bio-fixation potential. GHG abatement credits are seen as a means to make these technologies economically viable.
