Metagenomic insights into the profile of antibiotic resistomes in sediments of aquaculture wastewater treatment system

Jianfei Chen et al.

Summary: Our research revealed the profiles of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), their co-occurrence with mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and potential hosts in sediments of a crab pond wastewater purification system through metagenomic analysis. The residual antibiotics seemed to increase the propagation of ARGs in the crab pond, but no clear relationship was found between specific antibiotic types and corresponding resistance genes. Aquaculture had a lesser impact on sediment compared to other anthropogenic activities, but it increased the relative abundance of sulfonamide resistance genes. MGEs, especially plasmids, increased the risk of ARG dissemination. Various microorganisms were identified as hosts of ARGs, with Proteobacteria being the predominant hosts.

Microbial Interactions Drive the Complete Catabolism of the Antibiotic Sulfamethoxazole in Activated Sludge Microbiomes

Mengyuan Qi et al.

Summary: The study identified key players involved in the degradation of organic pollutants by differentiating functional activated sludge microbiomes. Primary degraders Paenarthrobacter and Nocardioides were found to play essential roles in the complete catabolism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The research also revealed the internal labor division patterns and connections among active members in collaborative biodegradation, providing insights for synthetic activated sludge microbiomes with optimized environmental functions.

Molecular and physiological analysis of indole-3-acetic acid degradation in Bradyrhizobium japonicum E109

Daniela Torres et al.

Summary: The bacterium Bradyrhizobium japonicum E109 is known for its ability to degrade indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and the genome analysis revealed genes related to IAA synthesis. Two sequences responsible for IAA degradation were identified, along with the identification of two degradation products.

Detection of functional microorganisms in benzene [a] pyrene-contaminated soils using DNA-SIP technology

Beibei Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, DNA-SIP technology was used to detect active BaP-degraders, finding that the diversity of degrading microorganisms was highest in paddy soil. The active BaP-degraders in the mixed microbiome were found to be both identical and unique compared to those in paddy soil, with functional genes of PAH-ring hydroxylating dioxygenases positively related to BaP removal. Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were both found to be active BaP degrading bacteria in the study.

Yingying Qian et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the degradation mechanism of Lysobacter sp. CW239 towards ochratoxin A (OTA), highlighting the significant role of carboxypeptidase CP4 in the process. The experimental results supported the hypothesis that OTA is degraded by the joint action of multiple enzymes in CW239, as proposed earlier.

Catabolic enzyme activity and kinetics of pyrene degradation by novel bacterial strains isolated from contaminated soil

Sakshi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the potent Gram-positive bacterial strains Kocuria flava and Rhodococcus pyridinivorans can efficiently degrade pyrene, with degradation rates of 53.8% and 56.2% within a 15-day incubation period under laboratory conditions. Enzyme activities and rate kinetics of degradation were also investigated, showing that these bacteria have the potential to play an active role in the remediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated sites. The study concluded that an increase in the initial concentration of pyrene will not compromise the bacteria's ability to degrade it, with no significant synergistic/inhibitive effects observed in the consortium.

Native bacteria isolated from weathered petroleum oil-contaminated soils in Tabasco, Mexico, accelerate the degradation petroleum hydrocarbons in saline soil microcosms

Monica Liliana Rodriguez-Uribe et al.

Summary: Bioremediation is an effective strategy for restoring petroleum oil-contaminated soils, and a consortium composed of Pseudomonas cloritidismutans and Rhodococcus qingshengii showed promising results in degrading fresh crude petroleum oil (FCPO) in soil microcosms. However, the bioremediation efficiency of this consortium was significantly reduced by moderate salinity levels in the soil, highlighting the adverse effects of weathering and salinity on the remediation of petroleum oil-contaminated soils.
