Association of short-term exposure to air pollution with myocardial infarction with and without obstructive coronary artery disease

Masanobu Ishii et al.

Summary: The study found that short-term exposure to PM2.5 in spring was significantly associated with an increased risk of admission for acute myocardial infarction, myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries, and myocardial infarction with coronary artery disease. The risk was higher for myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries compared to myocardial infarction with coronary artery disease.

Vascular Inflammation in Cardiovascular Disease: Is Immune System Protective or Bystander?

Khalid Muhammad et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death globally, with a close relationship to atherosclerosis. The immune system plays a crucial role in the development and progression of atherosclerosis in CVD, and different subsets of B cells may have anti-atherogenic effects. Therapeutic approaches targeting atherosclerosis risk factors have reduced mortality, but there is a need for novel therapies to treat arterial vascular inflammation.

Emergency hospital admissions for cardiovascular diseases attributed to air pollution in Tehran during 2016-2019

Mojtaba Sepandi et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of five main air pollutants, including CO, NO2, and PM2.5, on emergency department visits for cardiovascular diseases in Tehran. The findings showed that CO had the highest attributable number, with high levels of the pollutant leading to an increase in EDVs. It is recommended that local authorities take action to reduce air pollution.

Particulate matter air pollutants and cardiovascular disease: Strategies for intervention

Ankit Aryal et al.

Summary: Air pollution, particularly particulate matter, is consistently associated with elevations in cardiovascular disease and mortality. Mechanisms underlying this association include oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction, leading to vascular dysfunction and atherosclerosis. Interventions such as antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, statins, melatonin, and metformin may help mitigate the risk of PM-associated CVD.

Spatial Analysis of Ambient Air Pollution and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Hospitalization Across Sweden

Augustus Aturinde et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant spatially varying associations between ambient air pollution and cardiovascular disease (CVD) admissions across Sweden, with more variability in the southern parts of the country. More attention should be paid to the local impacts of air pollution on CVD outcomes in Sweden.

Diabetes mellitus in the era of climate change

Natalia G. Vallianou et al.

Summary: Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients are more vulnerable to the effects of heat waves and extreme cold in the changing climate, leading to increased emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and mortality. Air pollution as a result of climate crisis may also contribute to the increased prevalence and incidence of DM, especially gestational DM.

Acute effect of particulate matter pollution on hospital admissions for stroke among patients with type 2 diabetes in Beijing, China, from 2014 to 2018

Xiangtong Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the short-term effect of PM2.5 and PM10 on hospital admissions for stroke among patients with comorbid T2D in Beijing, China. The results showed that high particulate matter levels might be a risk factor for stroke in patients with T2D, with a linear exposure-response relationship observed for both PM2.5 and PM10.

Ambient PM2.5 exposure and hospital cost and length of hospital stay for respiratory diseases in 11 cities in Shanxi Province, China

Dawei Cao et al.

Summary: The study revealed a strong association between PM2.5 exposure and increased hospital cost and length of hospital stay for respiratory cases in Shanxi Province, China. Using WHO's guideline as reference, approximately 9.7 thousand respiratory hospitalisations, 132 million RMB in hospital cost, and 145 thousand days of hospital stay could be attributed to PM2.5 exposure.
