Demonstration and application of NMM-based fractured porous medium flow model

Qi-Hua Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, an FPM flow model based on NMMIC method was proposed to handle complex 3-D fracture networks. The convergence of NMMIC, theoretical basis of arbitrary mesh refinement, and peculiarities of NMMIC meshes were demonstrated. By analyzing 2-D and 3-D tunnel flow examples and testing the computational scale, it was confirmed that the model can accurately analyze groundwater flow in rocks with complex fracture distributions.

Smoothed numerical manifold method with physical patch-based smoothing domains for linear elasticity

Zhijun Liu et al.

Summary: The smoothed finite element method with node-based strain smoothing domains (NS-FEM) is notable for its upper-bound feature and insensitivity to volumetric locking. By extending strain smoothing to the numerical manifold method (NMM) with unfitted meshes, a novel methodology called physical patch-based smoothed NMM is proposed. Benchmark problems show optimal convergence, stability in terms of condition number, upper-bound property, suppression of volumetric locking, and stress stability.

Cell-based smoothed finite element method for modelling interfacial cracks with non-matching grids

M. Surendran et al.

Summary: The study introduces a technique of constructing polygonal elements based on the cell-based smoothed finite element method for modeling problems involving material interfaces. By increasing the number of nodes in the interface region to reduce the degrees of freedom in the system, while using a coarse mesh in other areas, the method maintains accuracy. It allows for independent representation of the interface, providing greater freedom in meshing.

Image-based simulation of complex fracture networks by numerical manifold method

Jie Wu

Summary: A new simulation method based on digital images for rock masses with complex fracture networks was developed using Numerical Manifold Method. The method utilizes a voxel crack model to efficiently generate physical cover and manifold elements in NMM for complex fracture networks, allowing straightforward simulation of continuous and discontinuous displacement fields. Several benchmarks validate the method's capability, particularly demonstrated on the San Leo rock slope.

Implementation of a J-integral based Maximum Circumferential Tensile Stress theory in DDA for simulating crack propagation

Cungen Wang et al.

Summary: The study applied a J-integral based Maximum Circumferential Tensile Stress theory to simulate crack propagation within the conventional Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) Method. By deriving a crack propagation theory suitable for DDA and embedding it into the algorithm, the method was validated through comparison with experimental results and successfully applied to simulate crack propagations in practical cases like landslides.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel high-order cell-based smoothed finite element method that constructs high-order strain fields without dividing elements into smaller cells, and exhibits better adaptability to mesh distortion. The method is implemented through User-defined Element Library in ABAQUS, greatly improving work efficiency.
