Experimental and theoretical research on creep-fatigue behaviors of 316L steel with and without 650°C thermal aging

Jianfeng Mao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of aging on the creep-fatigue behavior of 316L steel through creep-fatigue tests before and after thermal aging. Microscopic observations reveal that aging, creep, and fatigue affect the microstructure characteristics of the steel. A creep-fatigue constitutive model is constructed and used for life prediction, and the accuracy of the model is analyzed through comparing with test data.

Insight into the creep-fatigue interaction and remaining creep damage mechanisms in different micro-regions of 9%Cr steel welded joints

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The deformation and damage mechanisms of welded joints were investigated, revealing that the weakest position moves to the base material after fatigue loading. The early saturated grain growth in the inter-critical heat-affected zone (ICHAZ) contributes to this movement. Additionally, a fatigue damage parameter based on nanoindentation microhardness was proposed.

Cyclic plastic deformation mechanism and cyclic hardening model of Sanicro 25 steel welded joint

Haizhou Li et al.

Summary: The low cycle fatigue behaviors of Sanicro 25 steel welded joint at 700 degrees C were studied under different total strain amplitudes. It was found that stress amplitude increased with an increase in total strain amplitude, leading to a decrease in fatigue life. In addition, the cyclic hardening ratio varied with total strain amplitude due to the evolution of the dislocation morphology.

Summary: Residual stresses have a significant impact on the fatigue strength of welding structures, requiring an accurate model to consider their effects. The role of residual stress in fatigue life is mainly reflected in the increase of mean stress, and its redistribution is closely related to fatigue fracture behavior.

A comparative study between in- and out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue behaviour of a single-crystal superalloy

Mikael Segersall et al.

Summary: The study reveals that there is no significant difference in fatigue lives between in-phase and out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue of a single-crystal superalloy, with localized deformation bands being the main deformation mechanism and crack initiation preferred in these bands. Other TMF mechanisms, such as recrystallization and oxidation, are also discussed.

Cyclic deformation behavior and dynamic strain aging of 316LN stainless steel under low cycle fatigue loadings at 550 °C

Bingbing Li et al.

Summary: High-temperature low-cycle fatigue tests were conducted at 550 degrees C with various strain amplitudes and strain rates. The results showed that cyclic hardening was caused by increased back stress and the combined action of back and friction stresses, while cyclic softening was attributed to a decrease in friction stress. Additionally, the evolution of dynamic strain aging activity exhibited a clear dependence on loading cycles and directions, with DSA activity being stronger in the compressive plastic deformation regime of hysteresis loops.

New insights into thermomechanical fatigue behavior of AISI Type 316 LN SS weld joint

Suresh Kumar Telagathoti et al.

Summary: The study investigated the cyclic deformation and fracture behavior of a type 316 LN austenitic stainless steel weld joint under thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) and isothermal low cycle fatigue (IF) cycling. It was found that TMF resulted in higher cyclic stress response and reduced cyclic softening compared to IF tests, with in-phase (IP) TMF leading to lower lives than IF cycling at the maximum temperature. The accumulation of damage and failure depended on strength, microstructural gradient, and deformation incompatibility, with crack propagation influenced by microstructural transformations, creep, and oxidation.

Cyclic deformation behavior and life prediction of P92 steel welded joints under thermomechanical fatigue loadings

Shen Guo et al.

Summary: The present work investigates the thermomechanical fatigue behavior and life prediction of P92 steel welded joints under various mechanical strain amplitudes and phase angles. The results show that welded joints exhibit significant cyclic softening during fatigue process, with fatigue life being dependent on both strain amplitude and phase angle. A decrease in strain amplitude and an increase in phase angle lead to an increase in fatigue life, while fracture position changes significantly with changes in strain amplitude and phase angle. Finally, a modified energy-based life prediction model is proposed by considering the effects of phase angle and mean stress.

Deformation and failure behaviour of 316 LN austenitic stainless steel weld joint under thermomechanical low cycle fatigue in as-welded and thermally aged conditions

T. Suresh Kumar et al.

Summary: The beneficial influence of prior thermal ageing on the cyclic life of a type 316 LN austenitic stainless steel weld joint under thermomechanical fatigue was demonstrated through experiments. It was found that crack initiation mostly occurred in the heat affected zone in the as-welded joint, but shifted to the weld region following thermal ageing. Mechanisms governing life variations between the as-welded and aged joints were identified through detailed EBSD investigations.
