Crack tip fields and fracture resistance parameters based on strain gradient plasticity

V Shlyannikov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crack tip mechanics of strain gradient plasticity solids using analytical and numerical methods. A first-order mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity theory is adopted, and the effects of strain gradient on crack tip stresses are quantified. The study also formulates novel amplitude factors for strain gradient plasticity and proposes a generalized J-integral to characterize nonlinear amplitude factors. The research expands the understanding of strain gradient plasticity and its application for fracture and damage assessment.

Mode I and mode II stress intensity factors and dislocation density behaviour in strain gradient plasticity

V Shlyannikov et al.

Summary: This study evaluates crack tip dislocation density behavior and the effect of material plastic properties and intrinsic material length on non-linear amplitude factors using mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity theory. The study examines two planar stress-strain states under pure mode I and pure mode II loading conditions. By implementing a material model based on Taylor's dislocation model in a FE software package, the study determines the effects of fracture mode and stress-strain state on dislocation density distributions at crack tips.

Distinctive features of crack growth rate for assumed pure mode II conditions

V. Shlyannikov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of initial mode II loading on subsequent mixed-mode fatigue crack growth in various materials through experiments and computations, revealing the influence of elastic and plastic stress intensity factors and total strain energy density on crack growth rate. A new dimensionless cyclic fracture resistance parameter is proposed to quantify the effect of mixed-mode loadings on crack growth rate. The study highlights the importance of mode I crack growth in evaluating the effect of an initial mode II loading in CTS specimens for different structural materials.
