Recent advances in methods, policies and technologies at sustainable energy systems development

Zvonimir Guzovic et al.

Summary: Following the Paris Agreement in 2015 and subsequent agreements, sustainable energy development has become a major goal for many countries. To achieve this, three major technological changes are available: energy savings on the demand side, efficiency improvements in energy production, and replacement of fossil fuels with renewable sources. The support of multidisciplinary scientific knowledge is also needed. Therefore, a series of conferences focusing on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) have been established since 2002. This paper provides an overview of research published in special issues of leading journals dedicated to these conferences, focusing on energy policy and analysis, energy savings in buildings, integrated heating and electricity systems, biomass for energy, and measurement of energy and environmental sustainability.
