Adsorption-Desorption Hysteresis in Shale Formation: New Insights into the Underlying Mechanisms

Saad Alafnan

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption-desorption hysteresis of methane in shale through molecular simulation and reveals that adsorption causes structural changes and swelling in the organic matter, which may serve as a potential mechanism for hysteresis. The observed hysteresis leads to 10-30% uncertainty in the interpretation of recoverable adsorbed gas.

The Impact of Pore Structure on Kerogen Geomechanics

Saad Alafnan

Summary: The combination of hydraulic fracturing and lateral drilling has made it economically feasible to exploit unconventional formations. However, advancements in production aspects may not always be in line with our ability to predict and model the extent of a fracturing job. Molecular simulation was used to investigate kerogen's petrophysics on a molecular level and link it to mechanical properties, showing strong correlations between the two. This work provides a methodology for constructing kerogen structures with different properties, which can be useful for understanding shale's geomechanics at a fundamental level.

The influences of composition and pore structure on the adsorption behavior of CH4 and CO2 on shale

Xiangzeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationships between mineral composition, pore structure, gas adsorption behavior, and CO2-ESGR feasibility in shale gas reservoirs. The results showed that TOC content and mineral composition are important factors affecting CH4 and CO2 adsorption, and lower temperatures are more favorable for the application of the CO2-ESGR technique.
