Differential impact of clay minerals and organic matter on pore structure and its fractal characteristics of marine and continental shales in China

Jiaqi Chang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of organic matter, clay minerals and organo-clay composites on the pore structure and pore complexity of shale reservoirs. The results showed that the type and maturity of macerals, illite, kaolinite, and organo-clay composites are the main factors influencing shale pore development. The study also found that different clay mineral types have different effects on shale pore structure and pore complexity.

Gas content evolutionin western Guizhou and differential occurrencein China of Permian shale with type III kerogen

Xiaoguang Yang et al.

Summary: Research shows that shale in western Guizhou has stronger gas generation capacity mainly due to the impact of TOC and hydrogen index (HI), while limited differences in hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency exist between the two areas; the shale in western Guizhou has stronger adsorption capacity, influenced by factors such as TOC, geothermal gradient, pressure gradient, and burial depth.

Shale gas exploration and development in the Sichuan Basin: Progress, challenge and countermeasures

Liehui Zhang et al.

Summary: China's shale gas production exceeded 20 billion cubic meters in 2020, creating a miracle in the history of natural gas development in the country. The Sichuan Basin is the main battlefield for shale gas exploration and development in China. This paper analyzes the progress and challenges of shale gas exploration and development in the Sichuan Basin from four aspects, and proposes countermeasures and suggestions for achieving large-scale efficient development of shale gas.

Differences of marine and transitional shales in the case of dominant pore types and exploration strategies, in China

Xin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the similarities and differences in pore types between marine shale and transitional shale. The results show that the two shales have similar organic matter abundances and thermal maturities, but differ in organic matter types, mineral components, and pore properties. The study also quantifies and analyzes the different types of pores in the two shales, highlighting the importance of organic matter-hosted pores in marine shale and mineral-hosted pores in transitional shale. This research provides valuable insights for identifying reservoir characteristics and exploration targets.

Multi-scale multi-dimensional characterization of clay-hosted pore networks of shale using FIBSEM, TEM, and X-ray micro-tomography: Implications for methane storage and migration

Hongjian Zhu et al.

Summary: Researchers characterized various clay-rich shales using a multi-scale multi-dimensional workflow, such as FIBSEM, TEM, and X-ray micro-tomography (mCT), to visualize and quantify the nature of clay-hosted pore networks. The study revealed the significant role of clay-hosted pore networks in shale gas reservoirs as the dominant controls on petrophysical properties.

Pore structure complexity and its significance to the petrophysical properties of coal measure gas reservoirs in Qinshui Basin, China

Xiaowei Hou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the pore structure of continuous unconventional reservoirs (CURs) in coal measures in the Qinshui Basin, China. Results showed that coals have high porosity and permeability mainly from micropores, while shales have low porosity and permeability with a predominance of macropores and mesopores, and sandstones have mainly macropores. Micropores significantly impact gas adsorption in CURs, while macropores are essential for gas seepage. Effective porosity plays a significant role in the permeability of CURs.
