Experimental study on the thermodynamic performance of a novel tetrabutylammonium bromide hydrate cold storage system

Fan Wang et al.

Summary: Clathrate hydrates with large latent heat of phase change are becoming a key method to improve and replace current cold storage technologies. This study proposes a novel hydrate cold storage system and investigates its characteristics. The results show that internal circulating gas disturbance significantly enhances the cooling capacity of the system.

Key factors influencing the kinetics of tetra-n-butylammonium bromide hydrate formation as a cold storage and transport material

Hyunho Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the kinetics of TBAB hydrate formation as a cold storage material. The initial TBAB concentration and mixing rate were found to affect the formation process. The addition of pre-produced hydrate seed was shown to induce quicker nucleation. The type of seed also influenced the type of hydrate formed. The sensitivity analysis using an artificial neural network model identified TBAB concentration, temperature, and seed type as the major contributors to the kinetic performance of TBAB hydrate formation.

Heat transfer, energy conversion, and efficiency during cold discharge of a novel tetrabutylammonium bromide hydrate cold storage system

Fan Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the heat transfer, energy conversion, and efficiency of a novel TBAB hydrate cold storage system during cold discharge. The results indicate that forced convection caused by gas disturbance enhances the cold discharge capacity and reduces the discharge time. Additionally, the cold discharge capacity increases with decreasing cold charge temperature and increasing flow rate. The cold discharge efficiency is over 83% under different conditions.

On effective radii of dodecahedral cages in semiclathrate hydrates for van der Waals and Platteeuw model

Sanehiro Muromachi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on investigating the effective cage radii of dodecahedral (D) cages in semiclathrate hydrates using the van der Waals and Platteeuw model. It is found that the anisotropic shapes of D cages in semiclathrate hydrates provide unique gas capacity and selectivity. The model, based on Langmuir adsorption theory, can predict the differences between the D cages in semiclathrate hydrates and canonical gas hydrates by adjusting the cage radius in the spherical cell potential model for more accurate description of the cage properties.

Response to Comments on Effect of Salts on TBAB Semi Clathrate Hydrate Formation: Application to Produced Water Desalination

Aziz Alhejaili et al.

Summary: The original paper mainly focused on the thermodynamic equilibrium of semiclathrate hydrate formation in the presence of salts common in produced water, finding that TBAB hydrate formation is highly favorable. While there were criticisms of some inaccuracies and omissions in the paper, we believe they were based on a misunderstanding of our objectives and analysis, and acknowledge the need for more information in the original paper.

Phase equilibrium temperature and dissociation enthalpy in the tri-n-butylalkylphosphonium bromide semiclathrate hydrate systems

Jin Shimada et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of cation size and shape on the thermodynamic properties of semiclathrate hydrates, finding that branched alkyl groups raised the equilibrium temperature while shorter alkyl groups lowered it. Among the orthorhombic systems studied, semiclathrate hydrates with higher equilibrium temperatures had larger dissociation enthalpies.

Hydrate-based separation of the CO2 + H2 mixtures. Phase equilibria with isopropanol aqueous solutions and hydrogen solubility in CO2 hydrate

Sergey Skiba et al.

Summary: Gas hydrate technology shows promise for gas mixture separation due to its ability to selectively bind one component into a hydrate state. However, determining the composition of mixed hydrates is challenging, especially with the presence of small molecules like hydrogen. This study experimentally determined the solubility of hydrogen in carbon dioxide hydrate and investigated the equilibrium conditions of hydrates in various systems with different hydrogen concentrations.

Hydrates for cold energy storage and transport: A review

Summary: The energy demand for space cooling has more than tripled in the past thirty years, resulting in about 1 Gt CO2 emissions annually. The cold energy released from LNG terminals has reached a historical high, highlighting the need for suitable phase change materials (PCMs) like semiclathrate hydrates (SCHs) to improve energy efficiency in cooling processes. There is strong potential for disruptive SCH-based cooling technologies to be developed in the near future for energy efficiency improvement and environmental sustainability.
