Preliminary evaluation of the economic potential of the technologies for gas hydrate exploitation

Xuejun Chen et al.

Summary: Several trial productions of NGH have been implemented, but none of them has been verified applicable to commercial exploitation. In this study, the economic potential of each exploitation technology for NGH is evaluated, and depressurization is found to be the most promising method. Further technological breakthroughs are needed for the commercial exploitation of NGH.

Numerical study of gas production from fine-grained hydrate reservoirs using a multilateral horizontal well system

Peixiao Mao et al.

Summary: This study innovatively employs a multilateral horizontal well system to improve production efficiency in fine-grained hydrate reservoirs. A 3D numerical model is used to evaluate the influences of well configuration, deployment location, depressurization pressure, and reservoir properties on production. The results show that multilateral horizontal wells can enhance production efficiency in specific conditions, especially when branch number and length are increased.

Numerical simulation of gas recovery from natural gas hydrate using multi-branch wells: A three-dimensional model

Panpan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study innovatively proposes the use of radial jet drilling technology to stimulate oceanic hydrate reservoirs, and investigates the combined effects of radial wells and depressurization on gas production efficiency from gas hydrate-bearing sediments. Results show that radial wells can significantly enhance gas production rate but cannot extend the gas production life cycle. Additionally, the study characterizes the stimulation mechanisms of radial wells induced by depressurization.

Effect of lithological rhythm of a confined hydrate reservoir on gas production performance using water flooding in five-spot vertical well system

Guangrong Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of lithological rhythm of a confined hydrate reservoir on gas production through numerical simulations. Different lithological rhythm structures affect the production rates of gas and water, with warm water injection increasing production but with low energy efficiency.

Effects of the seepage capability of overlying and underlying strata of marine hydrate system on depressurization-induced hydrate production behaviors by horizontal well

Lin Yang et al.

Summary: The permeability of overlying and underlying strata has little effect on gas production rates in the early stage of hydrate production; in long-term production, hydrate deposits with lower permeability in overlying and underlying strata result in higher cumulative gas production and gas-water ratio.

Prospect of marine natural gas hydrate stimulation theory and technology system

Wu Nengyou et al.

Summary: The key to realizing the commercial production of natural gas hydrate (NGH) is to significantly increase the NGH productivity, whether by enlarging the drainage area, improving dissociation efficiency, or enhancing seepage conditions. The use of complex-structure wells, multiple-well patterns, novel production methods, and reservoir stimulation technologies can greatly increase NGH productivity. However, there are technical bottlenecks in fundamental research on NGH production that need to be addressed, such as sample preparation, simulated reservoir monitoring, and mechanical coupling technologies. The combined application of complex-structure wells, well-pattern production models, novel production methods, and reservoir stimulation technologies are key to increasing NGH productivity in a significant scale.
