Decyl esters production from soybean-based oils catalyzed by lipase immobilized on differently functionalized rice husk silica and their characterization as potential biolubricants

Guilherme J. Sabi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to produce decyl esters through a two-step process of hydrolysis and esterification. High hydrolysis rates were achieved by using Candida rugosa enzyme for the hydrolysis of refined soybean oil and used soybean oils. Efficient esterification of decyl esters in solvent-free systems was achieved using Thermomyces lanuginosus immobilized on silica particles extracted from rice husk. Octyl-SiO2 was found to be the most stable immobilization support after fifteen successive esterification batches.

High oleic safflower biolubricant through double transesterification with methanol and pentaerythritol: Production, characterization, and antioxidant addition

J. M. Encinar et al.

Summary: Double transesterification from vegetable oils with the addition of antioxidants can be a viable method for producing stable biodiesel and biolubricants. This study successfully obtained a stable biolubricant through double transesterification of high-oleic safflower oil with methanol and pentaerythritol, and the addition of the appropriate antioxidant. Optimized chemical conditions resulted in high yields of biodiesel and biolubricant.

Bioprocess development for biolubricant production using non-edible oils, agro-industrial byproducts and wastes

Madhavi Perera et al.

Summary: In recent years, vegetable oils and their derivatives have gained attention as environmentally friendly lubricants due to their biodegradability, renewable nature, and superior lubrication performance compared to fossil commercial lubricants. This review examines the zero-waste approach of enzymatic conversion for bio-lubricant production using non-edible oil and agro-industrial waste, while also exploring the use of lipase as a biocatalyst in place of chemically mediated transesterification processes. The article provides information on the types of lipases used, their optimal reaction conditions, and the maximum product yields, as well as highlights the physicochemical properties and enhanced application fields of bio-lubricants.
