Influence of iron-containing petrochemical sludge ash on the pyrolysis of pine wood: Thermal behaviors, thermodynamic analysis, and kinetic parameters

Jianbiao Chen et al.

Summary: The pyrolysis characteristics and kinetics of pine wood with iron-containing petrochemical sludge ash were studied, showing that the presence of PSA promoted the conversion of PW. Thermodynamic analysis revealed a gradual loss of oxygen from Fe2O3 in PSA during co-pyrolysis. Kinetic parameters showed a decrease in activation energy with PSA addition, with the most suitable kinetic models being D-3 and D-4 for PW and its mixtures with PSA, respectively.

Effects of inherent minerals on oily sludge pyrolysis: Kinetics, products, and secondary pollutants

Jiantao Li et al.

Summary: The effects of inherent minerals on the pyrolysis of oily sludge (OS) vary depending on temperature and mineral species. SiO2 has negligible effects on pyrolysis, whereas CaO and MgO result in stable liquid products and lower total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in solid residues. Fe2O3 and Al2O3 promote the formation of pyrolytic gases and long chain liquid products, albeit with decreased liquid product yields. Inherent minerals tend to inhibit N/S/Cl-containing pollutants during dehydration and devolatilization stages, but promote their release during thermal cracking and secondary reactions.

Co-pyrolysis of biosolids with alum sludge: Effect of temperature and mixing ratio on product properties

Nimesha Rathnayake et al.

Summary: With the rapid growth of biosolids and alum sludge production due to increasing urbanization, sustainable management of these waste materials is becoming more important. Pyrolysis has been identified as a promising method for biosolids management, but the land application of biochar derived from this method may be limited due to the potential increase in heavy metal concentration. This study investigated the co-pyrolysis of biosolids with alum sludge to produce high-quality biochar with reduced heavy metal content. The results showed that co-pyrolysis can effectively reduce heavy metal concentrations in biochar and improve the quality of oil and gas products, suggesting beneficial synergistic effects. The process parameters, such as pyrolysis temperature and alum sludge mixing ratio, also have a significant impact on yield distribution and product properties.

Direct chemical looping gasification of pine sawdust using Fe2O3-rich sludge ash as an oxygen carrier: Thermal conversion characteristics, product distributions, and gasification performances

Fang Xu et al.

Summary: The thermal characteristics and kinetic parameters of direct chemical looping gasification of pine sawdust were studied. The presence of SA and the increase in SA ratios were found to promote the conversion of PS, while decreasing gasification performance. Gasification temperature had a significant impact on the DCLG performance of PS, with the highest heating value of syngas obtained at 750 degrees C. The research results provide useful guidance for the potential application of Fe2O3-rich sludge ash as an oxygen carrier in biomass feedstock gasification.

Structural and chemical changes of sludge derived pyrolysis char prepared under different process temperatures

Jaroslav Mosko et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis of sewage sludge at 400-800 degrees C showed that increasing temperature led to higher phosphate and metaphosphate content, and lower reduced P species content; higher temperature also increased sulfide content and decreased sulfate and sulfite content; the effect on nitrogen species was minimal. Raman spectroscopy and NMR revealed significant contribution of graphite and (poly) aromatic hydrocarbons to the organic structure of sludge-chars.
