Continuous Co-Digestion of Agro-Industrial Mixtures in Laboratory Scale Expanded Granular Sludge Bed Reactors

Roberto Eloy Hernandez Regalado et al.

Summary: Anaerobic co-digestion can improve the yields and stability of single anaerobic digestion, but finding the right substrate proportions and optimal operating conditions is a challenge. This research used three EGSB reactors to study the anaerobic digestion of three mixtures from piglet manure, cow manure, starch wastewater, and sugar beet. It was found that three-substrate mixtures can achieve predicted synergistic effects and have stability.

Exploring Farm Anaerobic Digester Economic Viability in a Time of Policy Change in the UK

Angela Bywater et al.

Summary: The UK has a unique opportunity to create an exemplar in small-scale farm anaerobic digesters for renewable electricity and heat. The economic viability of farm-based biogas production was analyzed, taking into account various factors such as support levels, energy prices, capital cost, internal rate of return (IRR), and digestate value. The study showed that the technology approaches subsidy-free viability, but wider environmental and societal benefits must be explicitly valued for widespread adoption.

Reactor performance and economic evaluation of singular, binary, and ternary mixing of feedstocks for anaerobic digestion

Yanqin Wang et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of singular, binary, and ternary mixing of feedstocks for anaerobic digestion. Results showed that binary and ternary mixing stabilized digesters, increased methane yield, and distributed methane production more evenly throughout the digestion process. Economic analysis indicated that ternary mixtures had the highest net present value and internal rate of return, making them financially attractive under the analysis conditions.

Two-Stage anaerobic digestion in agroindustrial waste treatment: A review

Paulo Andre Cremonez et al.

Summary: The use of multi-stage anaerobic digestion technology is effective in treating agroindustrial effluents, especially substrates like manipueira, vinasse, and dairy wastewater which yield high amounts of hydrogen and methane. Future research should focus on new microbial technologies and optimizing process parameters for maturation and scale-up of the two-stage anaerobic digestion technique.

Process simulation and techno-economic assessment of vinasse-to-biogas in Cuba: Deterministic and uncertainty analysis

Arael Alfonso-Cardero et al.

Summary: This study presents a process simulation model in Aspen Plus (R) and a techno-economic assessment for the anaerobic digestion of Cuban sugarcane vinasses. It found that the electricity production biogas application (S_1) showed the best economic performance, with the mean electricity price leading to a net present value of zero being 90 USD/MWh. The recommendation is for Cuban plants to increase their capacities significantly or implement centralized biomethane production to ensure project profits.

Optimization and Analysis of Liquid Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Agro-Industrial Wastes via Mixture Design

Roberto Eloy Hernandez Regalado et al.

Summary: Anaerobic co-digestion is a commonly used technique for biogas production, but selecting the optimal substrate proportions in the mixtures is challenging. This study employed a mixture design to investigate interactions between different biomasses and used a modified Gompertz model to identify key parameters for methane production curves. The research successfully determined optimal mixture compositions and validated the suitability of the method for practical applications.

Soren Weinrich et al.

Summary: The study proposes a systematic procedure for successive model simplification based on the ADM1 for anaerobic digestion plants. It presents five model variants with different characteristics, simplifying the nutrient degradation and biogas formation. The complex model structures describe individual degradation pathways and intermediates during acido- and acetogenesis, while evaluating the stoichiometric methane potentials and microbial biomass yields of the underlying degradation pathways in detail.

Assessment of Single- vs. Two-Stage Process for the Anaerobic Digestion of Liquid Cow Manure and Cheese Whey

Margarita Andreas Dareioti et al.

Summary: The study found that liquid cow manure can be effectively treated using a single-stage process, while cheese whey is better suited for a two-stage treatment system. Differences in behavior of different substrates in single- versus two-stage anaerobic digestion systems were observed during the experiments.
