Natural source of Cr(VI) in soil: The anoxic oxidation of Cr(III) by Mn oxides

Summary: Cr(VI) in soils and groundwater is primarily derived from the oxidation of geogenic Cr(III) minerals rather than direct emissions. The oxidation of Cr(III) is mainly facilitated by Mn oxides in anoxic soils and by O-2 in oxic soils. The presence of Mn oxides promotes the oxidative dissolution of chromite even under anoxic conditions. The form of Cr, the abundance of Mn oxides, and the presence of reducing agents control the content of Cr(VI) in soil.

Aerodynamics Effect of Holes in UAV Wings Modified for VTOL Capability

Summary: This research explores the possibility of modifying the X8 Skywalker from a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle into a convertiplane. Computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel experiments were conducted to analyze the performance of different wing configurations. The results indicate that the proposed modifications can generate enough lift despite reducing the wing area, with the filleted hole configuration demonstrating less drag and turbulence effects at low angles of attack.

Environmental and Socio-economic Impact Assessment of the Switchgrass Production in Heavy Metals Contaminated Soils

Summary: This study evaluates the environmental and socio-economic impact of switchgrass production in heavy metals contaminated soils. The results suggest that switchgrass production in Cu and Zn contaminated soils reduces energy and costs, but improves biological diversity and soil quality. In Pb and Cd contaminated soils, there are no adverse effects on the environment and socio-economic aspects. However, in Cr contaminated soils, the toxicity significantly affects switchgrass growth and productivity.

An overview of slagging and fouling indicators and their applicability to biomass fuels

Summary: Slagging and fouling are common problems in biomass firing, and the nature of biomass ash requires a different approach compared to coal firing. Laboratory observed ash fusion temperatures and predictive indices are commonly used to evaluate slagging and fouling propensity, with thermodynamic models and neural networks also being applied for this purpose. Despite the convenience of predictive indices and ash fusion tests, a more graphical solution has been proposed for preliminary slagging and fouling predictions.
