Petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical constraints on the fluid origin and multistage karstification of the Middle-Lower Ordovician carbonate reservoir, NW Tarim Basin, China

Lanpu Chen et al.

Summary: The Middle-Lower Ordovician carbonate formation in the Tarim Basin, China, is an important hydrocarbon-bearing unit. This research provides new insights into the characteristics of karst reservoirs, the origin of diagenetic fluids, and the multistage karstification process in the region. The study shows that fracture-cave systems are the dominant secondary reservoir porosity source and that meteoric water and hydrothermal fluids play crucial roles in the formation of the fracture-cave reservoirs. Multiple dissolution stages, controlled by karst unconformities, led to the development of these reservoirs.

Influence of Heterogeneity on Carbonate Permeability Upscaling: A Renormalization Approach Coupled with the Pore Network Model

Haiyang Zhang et al.

Summary: This article modifies an established method for permeability upscaling in carbonate rocks and proposes a new regression-based approach. The results show that the new method provides more accurate permeability estimations for full-size core plug computations and is superior to the classical method for small-scale sample estimations. These findings contribute to the understanding of permeability upscaling and the impact of heterogeneity in carbonate rocks.

Low- and High-Resolution X-Ray Tomography Helping on Petrophysics and Flow-Behavior Modeling

Josue Mauricio Plata Chaves et al.

Summary: This study presents a workflow to create porosity and permeability models from CT images at different resolution scales, ultimately determining the upscaled value for the samples. Different modeling approaches can be chosen based on the type of heterogeneities associated with the sample, allowing for simulation of rock characteristics at various scales.

Multi-scale characterization of unconventional tight carbonate reservoir: Insights from October oil filed, Gulf of Suez rift basin, Egypt

Ahmed E. Radwan et al.

Summary: The Radwany Formation in the Gulf of Suez region has been newly identified as a potential reservoir rock with a combination of depositional and diagenetic processes creating various porosity types. Petrophysical evaluations and geochemical analysis have indicated the presence of unconventional and conventional hydrocarbon resources in this formation, particularly in the basal part, making it a valuable area for exploration. The study also highlights the importance of understanding the link between sediment microfacies and petrophysical parameters for predicting hydrocarbon potential in the area.

Making sense of pore systems and the diagenetic impacts in the Lower Triassic porous dolostones, northeast Sichuan Basin

Jie Li et al.

Summary: Carbonate rocks exhibit unpredictable porosity vs. permeability relationship due to the heterogeneity of pore systems, making the exploitation and prediction of prolific reservoirs difficult. This study on porous dolostone reservoirs reveals the coexistence of two types of open pore systems, which are affected by calcite cement and solid bitumen occlusion. MICP analyses show the difference between pre-bitumen and post-bitumen calcite cement affecting the pore systems.

Dual-scale pore network reconstruction of vugular carbonates using multi-scale imaging techniques

Abolfazl Moslemipour et al.

Summary: Vuggy carbonate rocks have complex geometry with pore size ranging from nano to several millimeters, making pore-scale studies challenging. A dual-scale PNM modeling approach was used to reconstruct the behavior of a vuggy carbonate sample, showing close properties to laboratory measurement data.
