Effects of pressure and temperature conditions on thermodynamic and kinetic guest exchange behaviors of CH4 - CO2 + N2 replacement for energy recovery and greenhouse gas storage

Junghoon Mok et al.

Summary: The guest swapping process of CH4 - CO2 + N-2 replacement in NGH reservoirs can be influenced by pressure and temperature conditions, leading to accelerated CO2 and enhanced N-2 inclusion during the replacement process. This study provides valuable insights into the replacement mechanism occurring in NGH reservoirs with different conditions.

Limits to Paris compatibility of CO2 capture and utilization

Kiane de Kleijne et al.

Summary: This study investigates the compatibility of CCU technologies with the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement. Based on life cycle emissions and technological maturity criteria, it analyzes the usage of CCU technologies using atmospheric, biogenic, or fossil CO2. The findings suggest that CCU technologies with technology readiness levels (TRLs) of 6 or higher can be Paris compatible in 2030 for certain industries, while only products storing CO2 permanently or produced from zero-emissions energy can be Paris compatible in 2050.

Replacement in CH4-CO2 hydrate below freezing point based on abnormal self-preservation differences of CH4 hydrate

Yan Xie et al.

Summary: Utilizing multi-defective ice to construct porous CO2 hydrate can improve the efficiency of CH4-CO2 hydrate replacement, providing a new method for CH4 recovery and CO2 sequestration. Experimental results showed that the replacement efficiency at 272.15 K was significantly higher than at 268.15 K, confirming the feasibility of the replacement concept.

Subsurface Carbon Dioxide Sequestration and Storage in Methane Hydrate Reservoirs Combined with Clean Methane Energy Recovery

Prashant Jadhawar et al.

Summary: This study investigates CO2 sequestration and storage into methane (CH4) hydrate sediments, examining the replacement of CH4 by CO2 in hydrates under varying thermodynamic conditions at both the macroscale and microscale levels. The results show high CH4 gas recovery within HSZ-II, while higher water saturation conditions diminish this recovery. In addition, significant CH4 production is obtained deep inside HSZ-I with the application of inhibitors. Our novel microscale micromodel evaluations reveal the release of CH4 gas through convection, slow CO2 diffusive mass transfer, and CO2-CH4 replacement within HSZ-I.

The dual-functional roles of N2 gas for the exploitation of natural gas hydrates: An inhibitor for dissociation and an external guest for replacement

Junghoon Mok et al.

Summary: This study closely investigated the dissociation behavior and time-dependent guest distributions of methane (CH4) hydrate after injecting gaseous N-2 at different temperatures and pressures. Results showed that higher temperature and lower N-2 injecting pressure accelerated the dissociation kinetics of CH4 hydrate. Raman and NMR spectra confirmed the immediate capture of N-2 molecules in hydrate cages at 268.8 K, with N-2 incorporation increasing at higher pressure. C-13 NMR spectra revealed N-2-induced structural transitions in hydrates and the preferential capture of N-2 in small cages. The findings provide insights into the roles of N-2 molecules in inhibitor injection and CH4 - CO2 + N-2 replacement methods for gas hydrate exploitation.

Enhanced CH4 recovery from hydrate-bearing sand packs via CO2 replacement assisted thermal stimulation method

Junchen Lv et al.

Summary: The study proposes a CO2-CH4 replacement assisted thermal stimulation method to enhance CH4 recovery significantly. Higher pressure and temperature result in higher CO2-CH4 exchange driving force, leading to increased CH4 recovery and CO2 sequestration efficiency. Stepwise thermal stimulation scheme shows the best performance in CH4 recovery and CO2 sequestration efficiency.
