Surveillance of Clinically Complete Responders Using Serial 18F-FDG PET/CT Scans in Patients with Esophageal Cancer After Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy

Maria J. Valkema et al.

Summary: Active surveillance for patients with esophageal cancer and a clinically complete response (cCR) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) involves accurate clinical response evaluations. F-18-FDG PET/CT scans can be useful for detecting tumor recurrence during active surveillance. In patients with ongoing cCR, the lowest SULmax was reached at 11 months after nCRT, suggesting resolution of radiation-induced esophagitis.

Summary: Endoscopic suspicion of residual tumor was the only endoscopic finding associated with residual disease. Based on its positive predictive value, this endoscopic finding may contribute to the diagnostic strategy used in active surveillance.
