Viral use and subversion of membrane organization and trafficking

Miguel Hernandez-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Membrane trafficking is a crucial cellular process that influences various aspects of cell function, and its dysfunction is associated with serious genetic, metabolic, and neurological disorders. Viruses often hijack membrane trafficking during infection to facilitate their replication, assembly, and egress.

Atypical molecular features of RNA silencing against the phloem-restricted polerovirus TuYV

Marion Clavel et al.

Summary: RNA silencing serves as an effective defense mechanism against viruses in plants and some animal lineages, but the interaction between phloem-restricted viruses and their hosts, such as turnip yellows virus (TuYV), is not fully understood. This study reveals the complexity of antiviral RNA silencing against TuYV, involving production of 22-nt vsiRNA by DCL2 and specific post-translational stabilization of AGO1 during infection. Further research is needed to reassess the role of the suppressor of silencing P0 in genuine infection.

The serine/threonine/tyrosine kinase STY46 defends against hordeivirus infection by phosphorylating γb protein

Xuan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the cytosolic kinase STY46 in Nicotiana benthamiana was found to phosphorylate and directly interact with the gamma b protein of BSMV, playing a crucial role in defending against viral infection. Overexpression of NbSTY46 suppressed viral replication and symptoms, while silencing NbSTY46 led to increased replication. This study provides insights into the antiviral function of NbSTY46 through phosphorylation of a viral protein.

SnRK1: a versatile plant protein kinase that limits geminivirus infection

Wei Shen et al.

Summary: The plant protein kinase SnRK1 plays a crucial role in defense against geminiviruses, with overexpression increasing resistance and knock-down increasing susceptibility. The activation of SnRK1 by GRIK is upregulated during geminivirus infection, while the viral C2 protein inhibits SnRK1 activity..UseVisualStyleBackColor SnRK1 also directly phosphorylates geminivirus proteins to reduce infection, indicating its involvement in the co-evolution of plant hosts and geminiviruses.

Host plant resistance in wheat to barley yellow dwarf viruses and their aphid vectors: a review

Gudbjorg Aradottir et al.

Summary: Cereal aphids serve as vectors for at least 11 species of Barley Yellow Dwarf Viruses (BYDV) in wheat, causing significant grain yield losses. Host plant resistance (HPR) is crucial in reducing crop losses to aphids and viruses. Challenges and opportunities in incorporating resistance in wheat breeding programs, as well as the role of modern technologies, are discussed in the review.

Reprogramming of RNA silencing triggered by cucumber mosaic virus infection in Arabidopsis

Maria Luz Annacondia et al.

Summary: RNA silencing plays a crucial role in mediating virus resistance in plants. The interaction between viruses and RNA silencing machinery is complex, involving the loading of viral small interfering RNAs (vsiRNAs) into host ARGONAUTE (AGO) proteins. This study shows that vsiRNAs from cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) can affect endogenous sRNA levels and displace other endogenous sRNAs when loaded into AGO proteins. Additionally, the viral suppressor of RNA silencing (VSR) 2b counteracts this by loading vsiRNAs and mRNA-derived siRNAs to affect gene expression.
