Thermal Runaway Characteristics of 18650 NCM Lithium-ion Batteries under the Different Initial Pressures

Quanyi Liu et al.

Summary: An experimental platform was designed and built to study the thermal runaway characteristics of lithium-ion batteries in civil aviation transportation environments. The results showed that the initial pressure has an impact on the thermal runaway characteristics, with higher pressure leading to shorter triggering time, lower temperature, higher explosion pressure, and TNT equivalent. Additionally, the number of batteries also affects the initial triggering time and temperature.

Experimental investigation on thermal runaway propagation of 18,650 lithium-ion battery modules with two cathode materials at low pressure

Zhuangzhuang Jia et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the characteristics of thermal runaway (TR) propagation for different modules of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) under different pressure conditions. The results show that as the pressure decreases, the TR behaviors become weaker, the maximum temperature and propagation time of the modules decrease, but the propagation time of one module increases. The mass losses decrease, but the impact force of battery safety venting increases. A heat transfer model is established to explain the trend in TR influence at low pressure.

Characterisation of thermal runaway behaviour of cylindrical lithium-ion battery using Accelerating Rate Calorimeter and oven heating

Mohamad Syazarudin Md Said et al.

Summary: This study characterized the thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries under different conditions using ARC and an oven. Batteries with higher capacity were more prone to thermal runaway with shorter induction times and higher maximum temperature rises. The oven tests only captured thermal runaway in batteries at 100% SOC, while ARC was able to induce thermal runaway in batteries at 50% SOC.

Influence of Ambient Pressure and Heating Power on the Thermal Runaway Features of Lithium-Ion Battery

Xiantao Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of ambient pressure and heating power on thermal runaway characteristics through tests conducted in a dynamic pressure chamber. It was found that only high ambient pressure with high heating power led to fierce fire behaviors. As the external pressure or heating power decreased, parameters such as heat release rate, total heat release, CO2 concentration peak, etc., also decreased.
