Population structure in Neotropical plants: Integrating pollination biology, topography and climatic niches

Summary: Animal pollinators play a crucial role in mediating gene flow among plant populations. This study compared the genetic differentiation among six Neotropical plant species with different pollination strategies and found that bee-pollinated species showed higher differentiation with increasing geographical distance, topographic barriers, and historical climatic instability. These results suggest that pollinators may differentially impact the potential for allopatric speciation at macroevolutionary scales.
