The long-term changes in food web structure and ecosystem functioning of a shallow lake: Implications for the lake management

Xiaoxin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study reconstructed the food web models in Baiyangdian Lake and found significant changes in ecosystem functioning and food web structure over the past few decades, mainly due to changes in primary producer energy flow. The ecosystem showed initial stability before gradually becoming unstable, with water level fluctuations and nutrient enrichment identified as key driving factors.

Sedimentary DNA record of eukaryotic algal and cyanobacterial communities in a shallow Lake driven by human activities and climate change

Hanxiao Zhang et al.

Summary: Global freshwater lakes are undergoing changes due to human activities and climate change, with lake sedimentary archives providing insights into historical environmental trends, as demonstrated in this study of Lake Chaohu in China. The construction of the Chaohu Dam in 1963 was associated with decreased richness of eukaryotic algal and cyanobacterial communities, while historical nutrient enrichment led to increased abundance of certain groups. Nutrient concentrations and hydrologic conditions were identified as dominant controls on communities, with significant impacts on community structures following changes in lake hydraulic residence times.
