On the Leonardo's rule for the assessment of root profile

F. Preti et al.

Summary: This study combines L-rule and eco-hydrological approaches to derive the profile of root architecture under given soil and climate conditions. The results show that exponential function can effectively describe the root profile in homogeneous soils, while functions derived from two and three parameters gamma distribution can better reproduce the observations in realistic vegetated soils.

Getting the message right on nature-based solutions to climate change

Nathalie Seddon et al.

Summary: Nature-based solutions (NbS) have gained popularity as an integrated approach to address climate change and biodiversity loss, but concerns have been raised about the overemphasis on tree planting for carbon sequestration. NbS should encompass a wide range of ecosystems, engage local communities, and be explicitly designed to benefit biodiversity in order to effectively tackle urgent challenges.

Implementing Nature-Based Solutions in Rural Landscapes: Barriers Experienced in the PHUSICOS Project

Anders Solheim et al.

Summary: Nature-based solutions are increasingly vital in political agendas for reducing hydrometeorological hazards, but barriers in their practical implementation mainly stem from institutional factors, stakeholder resistance, and technical/economic issues. The PHUSICOS project aims to demonstrate NBS in rural and mountain landscapes, but experienced challenges have led to cancellation of planned interventions.

Hydro-Mechanical Effects of Several Riparian Vegetation Combinations on the Streambank Stability-A Benchmark Case in Southeastern Norway

Vittoria Capobianco et al.

Summary: Vegetation can be utilized as a nature-based solution for river restoration and mitigating water-triggered processes. Choosing a mix of different plant species along riverbanks can enhance biodiversity and stability of river systems. Further research is needed to explore how different plant species combination can improve riverbank stability.
