Heavy δ57Fe in ocean island basalts: A non-unique signature of processes and source lithologies in the mantle

Caroline R. Soderman et al.

Summary: The study investigates the components from the mantle and crust in the sources of ocean island basalts using iron isotope data. The results indicate that heavy iron isotopes are correlated with radiogenic isotope signatures of enriched crustal material, rather than the involvement of the Earth's core. The generation of heavy delta Fe-57 melts in OIB requires various complex processes.

Do all Archaean TTG rock compositions represent former melts?

Hugh Rollinson

Summary: This paper argues that the diversity in chemical composition in Archaean granitoids of the tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite suite (TTG) is primarily the product of crystal fractionation, specifically plagioclase and hornblende fractionation. The implications of this proposal are twofold: the subdivision of TTGs into different types based on trace element concentrations may be misleading, and if hornblende fractionation is important in TTG genesis, it suggests an amphibolitic rather than eclogitic source simplifying geodynamic options. Case studies support the idea that Archaean TTGs can experience significant hornblende and plagioclase fractionation, emphasizing the need to consider fractional crystallization effects and least fractionated samples in geochemical models for their origin.

Oxygen isotopes trace the origins of Earth's earliest continental crust

Robert H. Smithies et al.

Summary: The research identified two different types of TTG using variations in zircon oxygen isotope composition and whole-rock geochemistry. Primitive TTGs containing high levels of sodium do not require a source highly enriched in incompatible trace elements, while evolved TTGs need sources enriched in water from the hydrosphere and incompatible trace elements.
