Organic Single-Crystal Actuators and Waveguides that Operate at Low Temperatures

Linfeng Lan et al.

Summary: This study reports a facile method to prepare cryogenically robust organic crystalline materials that can undergo large, recoverable, and reversible deformation at low temperatures. The materials, formed by combining flexible organic crystals with a polymer coating and a thermally responsive polymer, show linear and reversible responses to temperatures from -15 to -120 degrees C. This approach overcomes the drawbacks of amorphous polymeric materials at low temperatures and provides a cost-effective way to create lightweight devices for low-temperature environments.

Segregated Array Tailoring Charge-Transfer Degree of Organic Cocrystal for the Efficient Near-Infrared Emission beyond 760 nm

Ming-Peng Zhuo et al.

Summary: In this study, a TP-F(4)TCNQ CT organic complex was designed and fabricated via supramolecular self-assembly process, demonstrating the ability to emit near-infrared (NIR) light. The complex breaks the forbidden electronic transitions of CT state, resulting in effective NIR emission. Additionally, self-assembled TP-F(4)TCNQ single-crystalline organic microwires also show potential as active optical waveguides in the NIR region.

Organic Molecular Crystals with Dual Stress-Induced Mechanical Response: Elastic and Plastic Flexibility

Poonam Gupta et al.

Summary: The shift in interest from crystal structure to mechanical property among crystal engineering researchers has led to a better understanding of molecular packing, intermolecular interactions, and mechanical behavior. It has been observed that certain molecular crystals exhibit both elastic and plastic flexibility, attributed to the presence of flexible pi interactions and slip systems, while benzamide crystals are found to be brittle materials. This highlights the impact of molecular packing and intermolecular interactions on the mechanical properties of solid crystalline materials under stress.
