A review on challenges, recent progress and applications of silica nanoparticles based superhydrophobic coatings

Konica Sharma et al.

Summary: In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in the study of superhydrophobic coatings (SHCs) due to their wide-ranging applications in various industries. While there are numerous review papers on SHCs, minimal attention has been given to silica nanoparticles-based SHCs. However, silica nanoparticles are considered ideal materials for SHCs due to their abundance, affordability, transparency, and surface modification capabilities. This work focuses on the challenges, recent progress, and applications of silica nanoparticles-based superhydrophobic coatings.

Visualization study on the condensation heat transfer on vertical surfaces with a wettability gradient

Zilong Deng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the condensation behavior and heat transfer characteristics of humid air on vertical surfaces with wettability gradient. The results show that the traditional gradient surface performs better than the hydrophilic case but worse than the hydrophobic case. Therefore, a periodic gradient surface is introduced to improve the condensation heat transfer.

Shahin Shoeibi et al.

Summary: With the increasing awareness of global warming caused by conventional energy technologies and the development of solar technologies, more studies are focusing on solar systems. The storage of solar energy, particularly thermal energy, is important for the reliability of solar units in complex energy systems. Phase change materials (PCMs) have attracted attention as high-capacity thermal energy storage materials. Studies are being conducted on enhancing the thermal characteristics of PCMs in solar systems, such as by adding nanoparticles. These nano-enhanced PCM materials facilitate heat storage processes. The practicality of these methods, however, can be a concern. The article provides a comprehensive review of recent studies on nano-enhanced PCMs in solar technologies and offers some suggestions for future research.

A compact flat solar still with high performance

Guilong Peng et al.

Summary: The solar still is a convenient off-grid device for desalination, with the flat solar still (FSS) being proposed as an alternative to improve efficiency and productivity. The FSS collects condensate water using capillary grid and shows enhanced mass transfer, leading to higher performance and energy efficiency. The FSS can also be easily extended to more stages for latent heat recovery, paving a new way in designing and optimizing solar stills.
