A role for endothelial NMDA receptors in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia

Katheron Intson et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have linked NMDAR dysfunction with schizophrenia, but the focus has mainly been on neuronal NMDARs. This review explores the actions and consequences of NMDAR activation in the neuroendothelium and suggests that endothelial NMDAR dysfunction may contribute to blood flow alterations in schizophrenia.

Neuroinflammation and depression: A review

Romain Troubat et al.

Summary: Neuroinflammation interacts with key neurobiological factors of depression, potentially presenting a crucial therapeutic target for future treatments. This interaction may impact serotonin levels, HPA axis regulation, and hippocampal neurogenesis, leading to the pathophysiological cascade of increased glutamate levels and altered neurotransmission. It can be triggered by chronic inflammatory conditions or primary brain neuroinflammation, highlighting the importance of addressing neuroinflammation in the treatment of major depressive disorder.

Sabrina Grendene Mueller et al.

Summary: The consumption of energy-dense foods and ethanol are linked to mood disorders. The compound m-Trifluoromethyl-diphenyl diselenide has been shown to have antidepressant-like effects by modulating opioid and glucocorticoid receptors as well as acting as an antioxidant. This study found that this compound could alleviate depressive-like behaviors and oxidative stress induced by an energy-dense diet and ethanol in young mice.

A model of dopamine and serotonin-kynurenine metabolism in cortisolemia: Implications for depression

Felipe Dalvi-Garcia et al.

Summary: A computational model was proposed to investigate the interaction between dopaminergic and serotonergic-kynurenine metabolism under cortisolemia. The model simulations suggest that changes in the kynurenine pathway, caused by elevated levels of cortisol, can increase the risk of neurotoxicity and lead to certain aldehydes contributing to depression. The model analysis indicates that treatment with a combination of inhibitors of serotonin transport and kynurenine-3-monooxygenase could be an effective pharmacological strategy for depression.
