Multistimuli-Responsive Dynamic Effects in a One-Dimensional Coordination Polymer

Bibhuti Bhusan Rath et al.

Summary: The rational combination of suitable functionalities in single crystalline materials has led to the development of multistimuli-receptive actuators. The one-dimensional coordination polymer fabricated in this study displays all dynamic effects of photo-, thermo-, and mechano-responsiveness, paving the way for designing multisalient actuating materials.

Scale-Dependent Photosalience and Topotactic Reaction of Microcrystalline Benzylidenebutyrolactone Determined by Electron Microscopy and Electron Diffraction

Vince M. Hipwell et al.

Summary: Using microcrystal electron diffraction, this study provides evidence for a minimum crystal size threshold below which photosalience is not observed for benzylidenebutyrolactone. The crystal structure and transmission electron microscopy images confirm that crystals below ca. 10 μm in size do not exhibit photosalient effects. These results indicate that photosalience depends not only on the ability of crystals to support a photochemical reaction, but also on a size threshold that allows the accumulation of product phase to form a separate layer from the reactant, enabling the transmission of collective strain to drive macroscopic motion.

Intermolecular Interactions and Intramolecular Motions in Photomechanical Effect: Nonlinear Thermo- and Photomechanical Behaviors of Azobenzene-Functionalized Amide-Imide Block Copolymers

David H. Wang et al.

Summary: In this research, a series of azobenzene-functionalized amide-imide block copolymers were studied for their photomechanical properties, revealing complex composition dependencies. As the content of amide blocks increases, certain properties exhibit a trend of decreasing first and then increasing, which is correlated with the formation and dissociation of hydrogen bonds.

Light-Powered Autonomous Flagella-Like Motion of Molecular Crystal Microwires

Fei Tong et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that (Z)-DVAM molecular crystalline microwires can exhibit continuous oscillatory motion when exposed to a combination of ultraviolet and visible light, mimicking the behavior of biological flagella. This is the first example of molecular crystals showing complex oscillatory behavior under continuous irradiation, with rotational frequency depending on light intensity and polarization.

Mechanical Bending and Modulation of Photoactuation Properties in a One-Dimensional Pb(II) Coordination Polymer

Bibhuti Bhusan Rath et al.

Summary: As research on stimuli-responsive materials progresses, dynamic crystals are leading the investigation, while studies on the mechanical properties of coordination polymers (CPs) are still in their infancy. The report of one-dimensional CP with unique properties provides a new avenue for designing CPs with multi-stimuli-responsive actuating properties.

Light-fueled rapid macroscopic motion of a green fluorescent organic crystal

Prasenjit Giri et al.

Summary: The new green fluorescent organic crystal displays various macroscopic responses under UV light, with shape deformation and actuation controlled by specific parts of the crystal and the direction of illumination. Experimental evidence suggests that the light-fueled macroscopic actuation of the E-ArF2 crystal is rooted in the combined effect of E-to-Z isomerization and [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction in the solid state. A general mechanistic model of the actuation is proposed based on the experimental findings.

Minor alkyl modifications for manipulating the fluorescence and photomechanical properties in molecular crystals

Pengyu Li et al.

Summary: This study presents a concise molecular design by minor modification of the alkyl groups of cyanostilbene derivatives, allowing control of the solid-state fluorescence and photomechanical behaviors in the crystal state. This work provides new insight for controlling the optical properties and investigating the effects of the molecular stacking pattern.
